"March 10th is a very special day for gamers, some more than others". -Kamaria Williams, 9th grade
March 10th is a very special day for gamers, some more than others. You see, it is on this day we honor a very iconic figure in video game history, a character who revolutionized gaming as we know it, a character who is a face to the greatest gaming company ever….
Super Mario from Nintendo! Also, c’mon, there is no gaming company better than Nintendo. But that’s a discussion (or war) for another time.
This specific date was chosen by fans because it somewhat spells out Mario’s name: MAR10. This day celebrates Mario and his adventures as a whole. Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Mario’s sports games included. This day is to celebrate one of the most well-known video game characters ever. However, how exactly did it all begin?
Mario day actually started not too long ago. On March 9th, 2016 Nintendo released a video on its official YouTube channel about this new event. The video starts off showing a calendar with the date of March 10th on it, and then suddenly reading Mario. Then, Mario shows up and starts walking around through the office of Nintendo and adding some Mario flair wherever he went.
This became a hit and now, Mario fans of all ages celebrate it. However, how do Mario fans and Nintendo celebrate?
Well, according to Nintendo themselves, fans can go to the official Nintendo store of New York and get some cool Mario merch. Doesn’t appeal to you? Fine, then this March any of you Mario fans can go get certain Mario games for the Nintendo Switch System at a decreased price (like $39.99 so go to your nearest Gamestop, Target, Walmart, or the Nintendo eShop). The following discounted games include Super Mario Party, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (it is the exact same thing as the one from the Wii U. console by the way). You’re welcome! Also, if you have a Nintendo Switch online account you can check out the Super Mario Bros. 35 game (no extra charge to you but it will be gone by April). Also, if you miss this year's deals I’m pretty sure they’ll be some next year.
Fans of the beloved franchise celebrate this day by playing their favorite Mario games, baking Mario specific treats (? Block Cake, Meringue Cloud Cookies, Toadstool Cupcakes, Bob-omb truffles, Mario mini cupcake cake, etc.) buying new games and merch, and watching the Mario cartoons. Speaking of, there is something worth being mentioned about this specific year.
I’ve heard fans online call the 2021 Mario year a kind of doomsday (wasn’t 2020 bad enough?). You see, certain Mario games won’t be on the shelves in stores anymore. What's worse is we don’t know if this is forever or not! Another thing is that Netflix is completely getting rid of its Super Mario cartoons (The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and New Super Mario Bros 3.). Okay, maybe a lot of you readers haven’t heard of them until you bothered to read this but it’s Mario! Plus, I swear they’re really good, for nostalgia at least.
If any of this kinda freaks you out, don’t worry, there is hope. I’ve heard fans and Nintendo say that even though some of their games would be off the shelves you could still get them from the trusty eShop and Amazon (full price though). Also, you can check out The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros 3. cartoons from the WildBrain YouTube channel. They’ve posted full episodes of the complete series of all of these through their channel. It’s a great way for you to experience these cartoons. Plus, you might get some in-game knowledge.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this article. If you want more Mario knowledge then you can check out my earlier article Some history and my love of super mario (osatelegraph.org) or The official home of Super Mario™ – Mario Quiz (nintendo.com)
Are any of you Mario fans? What’s your favorite way to celebrate Mario Day? Does anyone want to challenge my earlier claim on Nintendo being the best video game company? Let me know in the comments and thanks again for reading!
