"Let's-a-go!" or "Here we go!" Those are the phrases I've heard and still hear from my childhood hero Super Mario. When I was only four years old my parents had a Wii console that would introduce me to what was to become my all time favorite franchise. I was a hypnotized little girl who fell in love with the cast of characters, the unique worlds, the many enemies I would grow up to squash, and the great storylines.
I am getting ahead of myself though. I'm going to take a step back in time, back to the very beginning of Mario himself along with some of his many games. So let's-a-go!
The very first game released on October 18th, 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is in this very game where players were introduced to the Mushroom Kingdom and the ultimately defenseless Princess Peach (who was originally called Princess Toadstool).
According to Nintendo, in Super Mario Bros. the Koopa tribe, who apparently knew black magic, invades the Mushroom Kingdom. As a result, the people of the Mushroom Kingdom are turned into various objects such as stones, bricks, and field horsehair plants, The only person that can stop this is Princess Toadstool, who was kidnapped by King Koopa (or Bowser). Mario finds out about this and goes on a quest to help the Mushroom Kingdom.
However, fans could argue that Mario actually debuted in 1981 as Jumpman in the first Donkey Kong game. The main point of Donkey Kong was to play as Jumpman and rescue the lady who would later be known as Pauline. Jumpman would climb ladders and jump over barrels throughout the game.
If this is conflicting to you I'll put it this way. Mario was presented in 1981 but had his own series in 1985.
So this is how a legend was born. As a lifelong Mario fan I'll present to you some of my favorite titles within the main franchise. If you have a Nintendo device check them out!
New Super Mario Bros Wii
I have to give some love to this game. This is the game that started my love for Mario. Basically, in this game it's Princess Peach's birthday and she's celebrating it with Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad. Not at all surprisingly, she gets kidnapped by the Koopa kids. So using the four heroes listed above you gotta travel throughout eight worlds to save her! You do get some pretty cool power ups such like the penguin suit, helicopter mushroom, ice flower, just to name a few.
Super Mario 3D Land
This game was released on November 13th, 2011 for the Nintendo 3Ds. However, it is also fine if you play it on a 2Ds. Anyway, the story goes that one day Mario gets a ransom letter from Bowser saying he kidnapped Peach. In this game you have to collect coins, grab some tanooki suits, and bust bad guys in 3D. If you make it to the end there are eight more star worlds you can play.
Super Mario 3D World
A continuation of Super Mario 3D Land released on November 22nd, 2013. The storyline and the game itself is a lot more unique. For starters, you get more character choices like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Blue Toad, and when you make it to the special worlds, Rosalina! Also, there are unique short levels within the game that require a certain character to get certain objects like green stars or power ups, There are also new power ups like the cat suit, and the double cherries, which allow you to make multiple clones of your character. According to Nintendo, when Mario and Luigi find a busted pipe, they repair it and find out that the Sprixie Princesses have been captured and spread throughout each world. I highly recommend it to anyone with a Wii U system.
Super Mario Odyssey
One of the more recent Mario games I've mentioned this game debuted back on October 27th, 2017 for the Nintendo Switch. With a great promo song to go with this awesome game is a new adventure for Mario. The setting begins in the Mushroom Kingdom where Mario and Bowser are battling. When Bowser beats Mario, Mario is sent to this hat kingdom where he meets his new friend Cappy. By using Cappy you can do whatever you want like possess people and animals, turn into a fireball, fling off a pole, and travel around the world! Also, listen to the song, it's called Jump Up, Superstar!
Super Mario Run
You can check this game out anytime through your app store. This game is the very first mobile Mario game! Debuting on December 15th, 2016 you have to tap through levels and manage Princess Peach's kingdom while you go save her. It's really addictive and full of the classic characters you love. I should tell you in advance though, you're gonna need money to continue and play certain parts of the game.
So that's a quick look into Mario's history and some of his cool adventures. I'll honestly never stop loving this franchise and continue to play all the Mario games I can. If you don't play Mario I suggest you give it a try, it's a lot of fun. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed and tell me your favorite Mario game in the comments!
