“After a monumental 35 years of playing tennis, and a debilitating knee injury, Roger Federer might be approaching retirement.”--Kai Vejsada, 6th grade

The lights dim as a figure walks onto the dry clay court, followed by the roar of the crowd as Roger Federer enters to claim his 20th grand slam title.
Federer is one of the greatest tennis players to ever walk the earth. He is currently out recovering from a knee injury which included surgery in late 2021, that has people wondering if he’s going to retire.
According to CBS Sports, “The 40-year-old announced he'll be unable to compete in January's Australian Open and would be ‘incredibly surprised’ to return in time for Wimbledon in 2022.”
“We will be able to see Roger again next year,” said his longtime coach Ivan Ljubicic to Sky Sport TV. “I don’t know when exactly, but he is undergoing rehabilitation. He is recovering slowly, he is not in a hurry.”
Federer, who started playing tennis at age eight, became Switzerland's junior champion when he was 14. In 1998 he captured the Wimbledon junior singles championship and secured the Orange Bowl junior tournament crown in Miami. He made his first major appearance by winning his first grand slam at Wimbledon in 2003. He is also one of the only three record holders for the most grand slams won in the history of tennis.
In June 2009, Federer won his first French Open, giving him a championship in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments over the course of his career. Additionally, the win was his 14th Grand Slam title, which tied Federer with Sampras for the most in all time.
Federer has won the whole US open five consecutive times. One of the things he is known for is reaching 23 consecutive semifinals throughout the four Grand slams. Federer is also one of few people that have one all four of the grand slam major titles. He is currently one of the older players in the circuit, as and he’s been playing for nearly 35 years now, and he’s still dominating the tennis world.
Additionally, Federer also was ranked #1 in the world for quite some time. He is now only second to Novak Djokovic for most time in the #1 spot.
“I'm a very positive thinker, and I think that is what helps me the most in difficult moments,” Federer once said of his monumental career.
"Even if I know that the end is near, I want to try and play some more big matches," Federer said to CBS Sports. "That will not be easy, but I want to try.
