"Since 2007, Apple has dominated the tech industry, from the Iphone to the AirPods and the MacBooks. If you were looking for a simple smartphone, headphones, and most consumer tech devices, Apple was the way to go. Other companies may have had better specs or better prices but no one could compete with the Apple ecosystem."--Olu Thomas, 8th grade
For example, if you open up your AirPods near an Iphone, they will connect seamlessly to said Iphone. Another example of Apple's amazing ecosystem is how you can move tabs from your Ipad to your MacBook with Apple’s sidecar. The Apple monopoly was not going to last forever. This said, many have tried to put Apple's reign of tyranny to an end but none have succeeded. The latest startup to attempt the colossal feat is Nothing Tech. Founded by ex co-founder of OnePlus, Carl Pei. OnePlus is a very promising tech company so Pei leaving to start something new says alot about the prospect of Nothing Tech.
Nothing Tech is looking to compete with Apple, not other Android companies. Their first product, the Nothing Ear (1) was a hit, selling out in just two minutes, and appearing on resale sites like Stockx. Nothing Tech's next product, the Nothing Phone 1 was their next product. It looks very promising, however not much has been revealed about the hardware. But the software has been revealed and is out for testing and has received good reviews, going for a minimalist aesthetic
In terms of price, of the Nothing Phone 1 the price has not yet been revealed, but if it’s all similar to Apple’s flagships it will fail, because consumers know that Apple makes quality products but no one yet knows if Nothing Tech makes quality products, of if they are just another company filled with hype trying to take your money.
Nothing's goal is to provide an in-between, Apple is killing the ultra minimalist market, while Android competitors are serving the market of people who want a more customizable experience. This is a very sharp transition and if Nothing can fit the niche of people who want something in between the two they may be able to perform very well. But if Nothing slips too far into Apple’s strong suit or into Android’s strong suit they will fail because Apple and Android have been doing what they do best for many years, and have got a very good reputation for doing so.
“The first phone I got was a gift and it was an Android, [so] I didn't choose it, it chose me,” said OSA Literary Arts teacher Amelia Whitcomb about her use of Android devices. “I'm used to the interface, nice camera and great battery life, clear picture and good color.” These are just a few of the things a long-time Android user has to say about the phone she uses (Google Pixel 6).
What do people think about Androids? After doing some interviewing most people I talked to said that when they got a phone they were looking for a device for communication, and most mobile phones can communicate perfectly fine. But when looking for something more such as fast charging or other features there are a few main options. A lot of Android devices boast great customization features which can be great for some people but not everyone. Apple offers a device that is very versatile and can do everything, great battery, great charging, great display and consistent releases. Both very strong and if Nothing ech can put up a fight with Apple the tech space will be forever changed.
