A gray van and a blue arrowed smile, easily identified as Amazon, one of the most well-known businesses across the globe. However, quite recently these familiar vans have received a new look, and a whole new personality.
Amazon announced their partnership with electric car vehicle Rivan in 2019. Rivian’s SUVs and trucks are identifiable by their rectangular headlines, brake lights that stretch across the entire rear end, and bulky frames. While they are not as popular as electric vehicle rival, Tesla,, they have been seen across the roads often.
The goal of Amazon’s partnership with Rivian is to create new vans that prioritize an eco-friendly approach to delivery, all while being highly efficient to receivers and truck drivers. Amazon originally planned on having “100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the road by 2030,” according to Amazon. And with that, everyone “got to work on designing a new state-of-the-art delivery vehicle.”
The whole concept vehicle took about 3 years to design before being finalized. The vans were tested “through prototyping and continued feedback from drivers [and] engineers to make sure the vehicle's the right quality and ready to come out on the road,” said Mark Cuyler, the Director of Vehicle Engineering at Amazon in a CCJ article.
Rivian explained that Electric Delivery Vans for Amazon, “were designed from the ground-up,” prioritizing sustainability and safety, along with comfort for drivers.
In Europe, these new vans had to be designed slightly differently from the United States. Europe has tighter streets, and in order to better fit in the cities, Rivian and Amazon made these vans shorter, and thinner, although remaining fully electric.
“The safety features, like the automatic emergency braking and 360-degree cameras, are game changers, and the drivers also love the overall comfort of the vehicle,” according to the same CCJ article.
Amazon spokesperson Kate Scarpa added to CCJ, “In addition to the van’s quiet performance, drivers have been impressed with the van’s smooth driving and great suspension and acceleration.”
Many think that the new Amazon EV vans look familiar to a science-fiction type car. A dark-gray van, sleek and smooth with massive windshield and tall tail lights. The signature blue checkmark on the sides, features a luxury, high-tech interior driver's cab, and the back, is lined with shelves and packages. A full tour and building process can be seen here.

To date, Amazon’s new vans from Rivian have delivered more than 260 million packages to customers in the United States alone, as of mid-October this year. Since Rivian’s partnership announcement in 2019, Amazon has been delivering packages with the Electric Delivery Van in “over 500 U.S. cities and regions with more than 3,000 vans already on the road,” according to Rivian.
An anonymous Senior Manager at Rivian, who has been with the company for 4 years described that she began working with the company before the factory was built, and throughout her time has worked to fit the needs of the company. Currently, she is working on “the go-to-market plan and event for our next line of vehicles.”
She explained how this Amazon and Rivian partnership is benefitting Rivian. “Amazon is a strong partner of Rivian. They have over 15% in shares, making them our largest shareholder.”
“They led a $700M investment round for us [Rivian] prior to our IPO. They also committed to ordering 100,000 electric delivery vans. Since that commitment, they have 10,000 vans on the road today.”
About Rivian and Amazon service locations, she continues, “We've also been strategic in when and where we open up Service Centers to not only service our customers but also Amazon.” For context, a service center was just opened in a “European center in Dusseldorf, Germany that's focused on servicing EDVs for Amazon and around the city. It's also why one of our first service centers ever to open was in Bellevue in Seattle.”
These new vehicles are safer for pedestrians and drivers and are much more luxurious than typical Amazon vans. They are also fully electric, positively affecting the future and Global Warming, with 10,000 out of the 100,000 goal already on the road. Rivian and Amazon was a perfect, eco-friendly partnership that is still delivering our packages, just with a new look and features.
