"Ever wondered about what goes on in the Theater department?" --Aj Kirk, 6th grade
Ever wondered about what goes on in the Theater department?
This year, Theater will be performing Matilda the musical. This is exciting to the 6th graders of OSA because they have never experienced an OSA play up-close and personal. The students interviewed in this article all have some sort of role in the play--whether that be acting in it or helping with the props.
Mars Silva is in 6th grade and is a quickly rising star in their pathway, having landed the role of “Lavender” in the highly coveted Matilda musical. Which will be performed later in spring. Silva also finds herself as the Narrator for Into the Woods, the other play that will be performed by OSA students in the fox theater. This play is only allowing one 6th grader to be in the play, as the role of Narrator.
When Silva was asked about what was currently going on in the Theater Sub-Pathway, she responded excitedly, “We’re currently working on our fractured fairy tales which we will perform today!”
Luckily Silva does plan to continue her education at OSA for high school, staying in her current Sub-Pathway.. When asked how she first began showing interest in theater she responded, “Well I went to this camp before for theater and I've been liking theater for a long time and I wanted to do theater.”
When inquired if she liked her sub-pathway she said “Yeah. The only problem right now is I’m having some problems with the group I’m performing with, so yeah.” I asked her what she would do right now in theater if she could do anything in theater, and she replied, “Well, change my group and get a better script.” I asked if she could give us the inside scoop on the Matilda play and she said, “Well, we haven't started rehearsals yet, they're starting during November and I'm very excited for it.” When asked about what bothered her in theater she stated that when people didn’t give their all into it, it annoyed her.
Silva certainly seems like she has a big passion for it! When asked about what major high school Courses she wanted to be in she responded that she wanted to be in Musical Theater. She also stated when asked about what job she said maybe acting, but she was just taking this sub-pathway for fun. When inquired about her favorite thing in theater, she said that, “My favorite thing about Theater is that we get to collaborate with each other and we build a good sense of community. And the performing is fun.”
“We have to take a few minutes to walk to Piano Fight, and it's pretty far away,” Silva said in response to what a day in the life of Theater looks like. “And me and some of my friends are usually singing along the way. And we get in there, and we do our warm up kind of, we just do tongue twisters, and breath exercise, stretching, and then we start our major project that we’re working on and we learn about some fundamentals of theater.”
In addition to Silva, I interviewed 6th grader Miriam Isaacs who is also in the Theater Sub-Pathway and thinks it's delightful. She’s in the Matilda play, too, cast as “A school kid.” Even with the smaller role, she is as happy as ever to be involved. She will most likely be staying for high-school “unless something goes horribly wrong, I’ll stay in Theater.”
Isaacs chose Theater because she likes acting and hopes this will give her good training if she ever wants to go pro. As to what she thinks she might be interested in pursuing? “Probably acting in films and on stage.”
When asked about the high school Courses for Theater, she said she wants to try all of them. Isaac's favorite thing about Theater is how creative everyone is with props on performances, claiming to have no dislikes with her Sub-Pathway.
A day in the life of Theater for Isaacs? “Well, usually we’ll get to Theater and we’ll go to a building called Piano Fight,” she said, “which is very far away from campus. We’re in the little room, and we have about 5 minutes to change into whatever we need to change into, be that costumes or in my case, dance shoes. After that we all count down to sixty to get everyone into a circle, because this is Theater and we love circles. And then people in Theater are super goofy, so they'll go like, 5! 4! 3! 2! 1! Happy New Year! And then we have our warm up, which is a breathing exercise, then a physical exercise, and then we do a bunch of tongue twisters.”
Next up is the wonderful 6th grader, Harper Jenny! Jenny plans to stay in Theater, but she is not totally sure about whether or not she would stay at OSA for high school. Jenny is currently “in the movement unit which is very important because an actor's instrument is their body.” She chose Theater because “I love it and it's my passion.”
When asked about the Matilda play, she said the same thing as Miller and Isaacs. All though, she did mention that she was part of the stage crew stating, “I’m props assistant with Aj.” Jenny wants to be in “Either the script writing pathway or the musical theater pathway.” She also said that she is taking theater more as a passion “ than as like, serious career.” But if she was, she would do play-writing.
Something that bothers Jenny in theater is how “People can be kind of closed minded. Sometimes they don’t really want to listen to other people's ideas. Because they think that their idea is the best idea and nobody else's idea can compare.” Though this annoys Jenny, her favorite thing about theatre is how “People come together and create something really amazing.”
Ruth Torpey is in theater and 7th Grade! “I have done plays in elementary school such as: Greatest Showman, Shreck, Annie, Phantom Tollbooth,” Torpey said in response to her history with theater. She enjoys her Sub-Pathway and said, “I like playing Theater games because a lot of the games are improvisation and directing people. There was a game that you did where you direct people out of the way from objects that were scattered on the floor.”
