"Have you ever heard rumors that are true? Maybe rumors that are false? What about the rumor of the Secret OSA Society?"--Mackenzie Luna, 8th grade.
The following article is a special May investigation by the OSA Shallot staff, aiming to bring you the very best of the campus' fake news.
Have you ever heard rumors that are true? Maybe rumors that are false? What about the rumor of the Secret OSA Society?
Yes, the Secret OSA Society. The society dates back at least 10 years, according to the few records found. Many have tried to discover what this society is about, who is in it, and where it happens, and yet no one has successfully pulled back the curtain. Until now.
I was looking in the school library after school around February. I was putting away some books that fell, and happened to open one of them. It was strange, the pages were stuck together and it was heavy. When I finally wedged it open, I stumbled across some wrinkled papers wedged in the book. The date was from May 2nd, 2014, and addressed to “The Fellows of the Society.” I took the papers home, and read through everything. There were a few Polaroid pictures and notes about an event underground. However, I could never find any names or exact locations. Then I figured I could try to uncover this secret.
I had no idea where to start. Where does one trying to learn about a secret society go? I began asking around, pulling random kids from the halls, questioning them. Did I make a fool of myself? Possibly. Do people think I’m strange now? For sure. But I did what I had to do.
“I am Mila Boyden, B-O-Y-D-E-N, M-I-L-A, reversed,” introduced the 8th grader. She came to me while I was interviewing students. When asked about strange sightings, she explained in great detail. “There was one time I was walking into the bathroom behind two kids. When I got into the bathroom, the two kids were gone. Then I heard muffled voices coming from inside the walls. There was another time I saw a short blonde girl disappear, too.” I laughed. “Like you?” I asked. She laughed before becoming serious again.
Boyden also described that her friends have had the same experiences. She confirmed that she was not hallucinating, or anything in relation, by showing me a video. And sure enough, two kids, one in a gray hoodie, the other in a green shirt, went into the gender neutral bathroom. When Boyden followed and pushed open the door, there were no kids. The bathroom was quiet and empty, the students had sure enough disappeared.
Cb Omand, an 8th grade Literary Arts student was one of the unfortunate kids I captured for an interview. She mentioned that she has no experiences or knowledge of a society, as she “is not here a lot.” Did that seem suspicious? Yes. What’s even more strange is that when I asked more, she merely answered “No comment.”
“I’ve heard some rumors of a society, but I don’t believe any of them,” she stated. Before I let her off the hook, I just had to ask if she is secretly a part of the society. “Why would I lie? That's boring. If I was in a secret society I would tell everybody.” Omand refused any more interview questions before she got up and left.
I sat at my desk in my room going over the minimal info that I had. When I got a text.
“G-N Bathroom 11am tmrw don’t be late.” Okay? Weird? It was from an unknown number, but I decided there was no harm in checking it out. So, the next day at school at exactly 11, I went to the gender neutral bathroom. And there was a girl in the corner.
“I am a part of the society. I’ve heard you’ve been snooping around, so I came to talk.”
We sat in the corner and began. “My name is changed for reasons, but Ear Ttereve is what you can call me.” She did not want to share her grade or art.
I wanted to move this conversation forward a bit, so I nudged a bit about the leader, and activities.
“Well..our leader is my age, 14, and has been here since 6th grade…gray eyes is what we call her, since that’s the color of her eyes. She’s blonde and she’s short…I shouldn’t have told you that.” She takes a breath before she continues. “Grey eyes tells us to summon rats from the toilets to hide in 204, Ms.Wagner’s room.”
When I showed a puzzled look she only sighed. “It’s a tradition. Most days we summon the rats. Oh and the walls, we travel through the walls to rooms, and the basement and stuff. I shouldn’t have said that.” Lot’s to unpack there, right? For one, the secret tunnels sound like the tunnel from Glenn’s office in Superstore, but it also explains why Mila Boyden constantly sees these strange disappearances, since they go in the walls.
Ear continued, “We do lots of things, painting, study groups, then camping, exploring Oakland at midnight…so much more. We once built a small hut, where we tried to trap as many people as we could, before releasing them again. It was hilarious.” I sat there stunned, that’s technically kidnapping, right…? “I must go now. I have said enough.” Ear’s comment snapped me back to reality, and the lights went off, I heard a loud slam, and then the lights came back on. I was alone again, and Ear had disappeared.
That sure was strange, I mean, she happened to “accidentally” spill a LOT of information.
Okay, so this sounds like the secret society at Yale in Gilmore Girls, where they do all the weird, secret stuff. Except, instead of a society at an Ivy League school in a fictional show, it’s at a middle school in California. The next part I wanted to decode, who was the leader? All I know is she is a SHE, has grey eyes, blonde hair, is short, and joined in 6th grade.
So I might know her. I do know her…actually. And so do others.
Zanthe Jones-Gerachis said the one girl who fits that description is Mila Boyden. Cb Omand, Abi Ambrose, and many other anonymous 8th graders also said, Mila Boyden. But I needed proof.
And I got that. I followed Boyden, when she left for the school day, I followed her to the bathroom, and I, a very light-on-their-toes person, was so silent. I caught her, with my own eyes, lifting up a piece of wall under the sink in one of the 2nd floor bathrooms, and entering. “HEY,” I shouted. She spun around, a look of horror and guilt on her face, as she realized she had been caught.
I guess we’ll never truly know everything that happens in this society, but maybe, just maybe, the rest of us can find out. As for Mila Boyden, AKA “Grey Eyes,” what happens to her? Well, it’s up to whoever reads this, and wants to do something about her. Because honestly? I like knowing the answers, but not having anyone get hurt.
