Old fashioned movies are unique in their own way. They capture what life and entertainment was like in the past. This year, old fashioned movies have been brought to OSA.

Every Tuesday at lunch in Ms. Pontecorvo’s room, there is a new old fashioned movie (or a continued old fashioned movie from the previous week) showing on her projector. Students from previous classes in room 256 stay there to watch and other students show up a few minutes later.

I spoke with Melanie Alicea, an 8th grade member of the Classic Movie Club. She has been watching old movies and T.V. shows with her mom for a long time. Melanie likes movies such as Home Alone, Oceans 8, Coraline, How to Train your Dragon, and Isle of Dogs. While none of those movies are from the 1930s to 1970s, she still enjoys them. Melanie takes a class before lunch in room 256, and decided to stay there for the movies during lunch. She says about 30 people come and out of those 30 people, 10-15 are actually watching the movie.

“In old fashioned movies, women are way more objectified.” Melanie says, “even though the sound quality is better nowadays, the plots in movies are pretty much the same.” She also points out that movies today are about drugs and violence, whereas movies long ago are about romance. Overall, Melanie thinks that old movies are important to remember and preserve.

Personally, I think that old movies are especially fun to watch. I like seeing how special effects evolved, how movie stars back then wore their hair and clothes, what changes in comedy, romance, horror, and other genres there have been and the quality of sound and film. I like seeing how animation evolves from 2D to 3D. I enjoy watching super old movies, like A Trip to the Moon, to  see all the effort that went into making the 12 minute film.
Old movies just have a special something to them, like a feeling of watching something in another world, almost foreign to ours.
