At OSA, social media is a way of life for many. Whether that be Instagram, Snapchat, We Heart it, Youtube, Tik Tok, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook or something else, it takes up a lot of time for many young people.
Cecelia Fontaine, an OSA 6th grader, is one of these people. She has a vast array of social media apps including Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Tik tok, YouTube and We Heart It. She has 600 stable followers on instagram, and by the end of the month looking for 900. I also interviewed 6th grade Milo Trejo, who uses Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr and We Heart It. The last interview was with Isoke Blake, a 6th grader whose social media apps include YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, and a deleted Tik tok. But why do people use sm? What are their opinions?
I asked what their favorite social media app was, and there were two answers: Instagram and YouTube.
“Instagram due to the fact that you can do so much on it and it’s easy to use. You can post, comment and chat with your friends on insta. its user friendly, and you can keep up with your idols. And it free” states Trejo.
Fontaine agrees, saying “I have my own mini business for my edits, that’s @editsbylemony on instagram, thank you.”
Blake disagrees, saying “YouTube, because there’s an infinite amount of content, from animations to music videos.”
The next question i asked was what the most popular sm app was, and Fontaine was eager to answer. “Twitter, because that's where all the tea comes from sis.” But blake had a diffrent opinion.
“Instagram, because there are so many people are on it.” Blake replied.
But I also wanted to know about the least liked. “Tik Tok, because it's cringy af sis.” Trejo states matter-of-factually.
“Probably Facebook, because that's where all the old people roam (no offense!)” Fontaine adds.
I wanted to know their positions on some very popular apps as well, including Tik Tok, Snapchat and Instagram.
First I asked about Instagram. “I like being able to communicate with people, and post and stuff, that's cool.” said Blake.
Fontaine agreed, saying “I like checking my dms and stuff and chatting with people.”
Next was snapchat. “All the editors on insta asked for my snapchat so im snapchat famous lol.” Fontaine replied. Blake and Trejo don't have Snapchat, but they think it would be cool.
Last but not least was Tik Tok, the mother of cringe.
“I mean, sometimes the videos are funny, but it's mostly people trying to get attention…” Trejo states.
“I'm just there for the memes.” Fontaine adds. Blake says, “I just watched the videos, wasn't there to get attention.” She deleted her account.
The open world of social media is not just a positive place. That's why I asked why they think some people don't like sm.
“Because of all the expectations, like you have to be super pretty to get a lot of followers or whatever, and also because of cyberbullying…” Blake said with a very valid point.
Trejo responded saying “Because of all the advertisements, or that it might seem hard to use.”
Last i asked if there was one thing they don't like about social media. “Too. many. Advertisements.” Trejo says. “Like i said before, the expectations sm sets.”
And with that, my article ends. See you next time!
