Since late April several sixth grade students have been learning n campus and there have been many changes to regular school due to quarantine. I have interviewed three sixth grade students who have returned to school about their experiences.
Do you feel like being on campus is helping you in any way? “I do think it’s helping, I like being with other people and I think it’s easier to work when there’s other people around me,” Foxe-Robertson responded. Deetz felt the same way. “Yeah, definitely, They have amazing studying time and my grades have been improving.” “It’s helping me because usually during the breaks I would just be watching Youtube, but now I use that time to do homework,” Murray responded. Cohort Five Students Is there anything you’d want to change about the current system? “I think it would be better if the teachers were actually in the classrooms, and also I’d like to do the full day. But if this is the best we can do now, I’ll take whatever I can get,” Ynez replied. Deetz didn’t feel the same and said simply, “I like how it is.” Murray only had one thing she wanted to change.,“I’ve heard about next year and how we switch our art emphasis for Tuesday and Thursday. But the problem is, you can only do it inside of your art but I want to try theatre.” Mr. Qui: 6th Grade Math and Science Teacher Was there anything surprising about returning that you hadn’t considered before? “It was so weird to be in a classroom with other people, that many people,” Foxe-Robertson said. “ Because it had been a year since I had done that and there were also so many different things that it was just a little bit weird, but overall I made friends and I learned who people were.” “I’d never really seen OSA except for when I auditioned and it looks different than I expected it to. It’s really big, I actually thought it would be smaller,” Deetz answered. “It was surprising how I could be around these people,” Murray responded. All three students felt very similarly about coming to in-person school. It is fun, easy to meet people, and is a great help if you have trouble with schoolwork. | How does it feel to be on campus for the first time? “I think it’s great! I really like it, it’s so much different than I imagined though,” said Ynez Foxe-Roberson responded. “It’s more fun than being on a screen,” answered Zoe Deetz. “Being in a cohort with other people, that’s fun too.” Talise Murray also had a positive response. “I’m feeling good because it’s fun to work with people in person,” she said. How does it feel to actually meet the people you’ve been on zoom class with? “It was like I was meeting them for the first time,” Foxe Robertson said, “People were so different than I imagined, I actually made a friend on the first day.” “Once you get to know the rest of your cohort members it’s much easier to talk to them,” Deetz replied. Murray felt slightly different. “It doesn’t feel awkward, some people I didn’t even know existed though because of Zoom.” Mr. Alexander: Cohort Five Do you feel like this is better or worse than distance learning? All responded very similarly. “In my experience it's better because I’ve been around people that I already knew for so long that it hasn’t really changed, and I just needed to be connected again,” Foxe-Robertson responded. “I actually think it’s better than distance learning mostly because like I said, the screen makes my eyes hurt and I hate it, so being in person creates new experiences, I guess.” Replied Deetz. “I like this much more,” Murray answered. |
