"Production Design is an emphasis at Oakland School of the Arts. In this class, students learn about set design, stage management, sound design, lighting design, and projection design." --Rafi ponet, 6th grade
Jean Francois Revon is the chair of Production Design at OSA. Revon answered some questions and it seems like Production Design is a blast! When asked about a funny experience that has happened in Production Design he said, “Once we built a giant hairspray and some students kept taking selfies in it.”
Production Design seems like a very hands-on and interactive class so, how did they do hands-on projects on Zoom last year? When asked about what Production Design was like on Zoom, Revon said, “It was super challenging. We focused more on technology and design.”
Bailey Lake-Short, a 7th grade student in Production Design commented on how they were able to use online programs such as Photoshop and Sketchup, which normally students don’t use until high school.
A student and a teacher were asked to describe a normal day in Production Design. 6th grader Aneesa Burdick said, “So far a normal day in Production design is students coming up with fun creative ideas in class.”
“Students get in the building calm and grounded and we go over the design work and then we break up into groups and start working on their design as me and the other teacher, Jon, walk around and teach,” said Revon about what a common day in PD looks like.
Revon’s favorite project to teach is “Barcheture Design” where the students build dog and cat houses and then exhibit them to be viewed.
Lake-Short’s favorite project was when they all made a virtual Adams family set for a play the theater students were holding on Zoom.
“I enjoy set design and have always found architecture and home decor really interesting and Production Design fits right along those lines,”said Lake-Short on why she chose Production Design.
Aneesa Burdick applied for OSA because she likes art and design and wanted to get better at those things. Sixth grader Ethan Hajduk applied for Production Design because his dad did lighting design so he thought Production Design would be cool.
Production Design seems like a mix of art crafts and technology, so I wondered what school subject it was most like. Lake-Short said math because in Production Design math and measurements help a lot in some aspects like building things.
A funny experience that has happened to Lake-Short in Production Design was “when the jaw of a fake skull the class was drawing fell off and everyone started freaking out because they thought it broke.”
Production Design is the backbone of the many performances that OSA puts on. They are a class of creative students with a talented teacher who knows how to bring out all of that innovation.
