Halloween has come and gone, and with it was OSA’s Haunted House. The OSA Haunted House is an event put on by Production Design that takes place every other year. It is a fun event for students in both Fashion and Production Design to take part in making. Metamorphosis being the theme this year for the school, we knew it was gonna be fun.
Gabriella Luevano, a 7th grader in the Fashion Sub-pathway at OSA, states she was excited to see the finished project. Much like Ronlad Williams, a 7th grade Production Design student agrees with Luevano. “My favorite part of the process is seeing the haunted house actually get finished,” Williams explained. “It started out as two or four walls, and now it's turned into a whole haunted house.”
The Haunted House was amazing to see. Production and Fashion did an extremely good job in decorating rooms and acting. Their special sound effects and decorations looked and sounded amazing.
New to OSA, a 6th grade in Fashion, Camila Gaytan said a main struggle during the building process was the budget, and not having enough material for building. They wanted to buy memory foam but were not able to get it and had to use a cheaper, alternative fabric. Her favorite part of the process was decorating, which included making cockroaches, and hanging out with her friends! Overall, her experience while building and decorating was “fantastic.”
Jean-Francois Revon, head of Production Design at OSA, said that the biggest struggle was with the budget, as they had very limited supplies. Besides the budget, the working process went very well and was overall a good learning experience for students and staff, demonstrating how in some situations you must work together.
Sandra Sumandal, a campus supervisor at OSA who attended the Haunted House rated it a seven out of ten, only because she heard the previous haunted house was apparently a lot scarier than this one. Otherwise she said it was amazing. “I thought they did an amazing job with the special effects and how it was built,” Sumandal said. She also said that the price was a bit expensive for a two minute walk through. Sumandal understands it's for the school, but she thinks a more reasonable price could've been achieved.
The Haunted House effects and actors were a major part of the process, with having to find people to play a role as well as manage the lights, who could be available for the run of the event,Though it was a stressful process, it all turned out amazing and a lot of people absolutely loved it, like Sumandal and Luevano.
Viv Clanten is a 6th grader in the production design department who worked hard on a costume crossed between a crow, a wasp, and a cockroach. Something Clanten most enjoyed was making the crow head for this costume. As it started with Clanten only making corn pieces into building this amazing haunted house. Clanten’s improvement during this project is only one of the examples of how Revon’s students have grown in skill.
Though materials were hard to get in the end, Revon still appreciated his students working so hard on everything and their amazing work, acting, and skills.
