On Wednesday, September 11th, Jack Russ and Asher Lockwood gave me an inside view on the Theatre emphasis at OSA. All of the students interviewed within the Theatre program all said the same thing: they loved it.
“It’s fun and educational and expands your mind as an artist,” said Russ, an 8th grader in Theatre. “I’m happy with theater and it’s gonna help me achieve my dreams.”
After sitting in on a lesson and watching what went on in their class, I felt like even I picked up a few tricks. Their teacher, and chair of the Theatre Department, Ms. Helfer, was very clear with instructions and made sure everyone was doing the best they could in various activities throughout the day. She led the class through activities like articulation practice through songs like “The Witch's Rap” from the musical Into the Woods, and walking through space while demonstrating various emotions at different levels and tempos.
As for actually improving talent, being in the Theatre program really does help kids grow into great young actors. When asking Lockwood about it, he responded, “I know a lot of people think you don’t get a lot of improvement from it, but the talent difference between 6th and 8th [grade] is drastic. It really shows how we improved.” By performing monologues in front of the class, students can get helpful feedback to improve their skills on the daily.
The Theatre program not only helps its students become better actors, but helps them express themselves creatively—by not only sharing monologues, but by performing in school plays, musicals, and more. The next Theatre event is the school-wide musical, Fun Home, which premieres on October 4th at Sweets Ballroom.
Overall, student’s feelings about the Theatre program were that it’s, “Crazy, and getting to do what you love everyday” and “The greatest experience ever.”
