When you hear the two words “winter break” what first comes to mind? Sledding in fluffy, white, snow? Sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace? Decorating the tree that took hours and hours to find? I interviewed four OSA students to see what they’re doing over the holidays.
First up is Phoebe Lefebvre, an eighth grader in Literary Arts. Lefebvre is going to New York City with her mom and is very excited about it, even though she’s been to New York more than four times in her life.

When talking to Lefebvre about her trip, she stated, “I am very excited to go to New York City because I know I will have a lot of fun, [due to the fact] I have been to New York before and love seeing distant family.” However, New York is not a yearly tradition for Lefebvre who usually travels to various places or stays home for the holidays.
Next up is Declan McMahon, a seventh grader who is also in Literary Arts. McMahon is going to Tucson, Arizona with his dad, mom, and sister for winter break to see all of his dad’s side of the family.

McMahon “can’t wait” for the reunion because, according to McMahon, “All my family is there and [it’s] really the only time I get to see my family. We make recipes and [have] a gift exchange and it’s just really fun.” While Tucson is a tradition for McMahon, it is not always a Christmas one because McMahon switches out between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This means last year he was eating turkey in the same city that he is going to be unwrapping presents in.
Third is Ruby Ruport, an eight grader in Fashion Design, who is visiting the island of Kauai in Hawaii for holiday break with her mom, dad, and three brothers.

While this isn’t Ruports first time in Hawaii, it will be the only one she remembers because the last two times her family went, she was only one and three years old. If it weren’t for Ruports fathers’ birthday being over winter break, this trip most likely would have never happened. They usually stay home for Christmas or go over to a family members house. But what is Ruport’s family actually doing in Hawaii? They’re planning on taking a helicopter ride over the islands in lieu of a birthday party. “I’m really excited,” Ruport stated, “I’ve never rode on a helicopter. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
Last but not least is Carly Thacker, a sixth grader in Literary Arts. Thacker is planning on staying home and enjoying all that the holidays have to offer with her mom and twin sister Dallas.

“Usually some of my family members come over,” Thacker said, “And we usually have this really big dinner. And after, we all unwrap the presents that we got for each other.” Thacker is most definitely looking forward to this Christmas because she has been “really busy with schoolwork and homework.” Plus, she can’t wait until she can “just relax.”
All in all, the holiday season is a great time to spend time with family, laugh, and have fun. Whether that means going to tropical destinations like Hawaii or just staying home and relaxing.
