The Visual Arts department at Oakland School for the Arts includes art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, and other crafts. Visual arts is one of the most popular programs in OSA.
“My Auditioning time was pretty nerve wracking, I came into a really big room and there was a set up inside and there was a lot of vases and skulls and we were supposed to sit around it draw what we see. It felt like I was going to be there for eternity. My sense me heightened and I heard the clock and water running, things I wouldn’t normally hear.” Says Hazel Burbaker, 10th grade.
“I waited in the student center for my name to my called and it did and I went up to room 271 on the second floor where I did a still life of a pumpkin and a Vikings helmet. Then I was led to Mr Kings room where I was interviewed by Ms. Wynn and Mr. Brown who reviewed my admission portfolio.” Says Jo-Yi Min.
“I waited in the student center really nervous and tapping my knee and tapping my foot on the ground. I went upstairs in 271 and they where playing c playing classical music like they always do. a still life and then I drew a skull, then talked to Miis Wynn and Mr. Pablo, then they asked me some questions, they asked me how much I drew in my notebook and I said I did a lot (I did not). They said that I looked like Emmy, my at the time 7th-grade sister.” says Lily Birkholz, 7th grade.
”I Started in room 271 we were sketching stuff, that was the waiting room. I was in there for 15 minutes. Then in ms Hannas room some of the art teachers were there and looked through my portfolio and sketchbook. And then I saw them write down on the clipboard.” Says Lola Harris, 6th grade.
Doing this interview I noticed that they all said that one of the greatest things about being in Visual Arts was that it was like a community. Well almost everyone, Birkholz said, “ I did enjoy [my time there], I enjoyed the part where we make money off our art that's another reason we are better than Theater”
“I think one of the amazing parts is that I get to be with people with so much personality and such good artist.” Says 6th grader Nia Phelan. “Adding on to Nia, at my old school there where people who weren't really into arts but here it is so cool to have people who are so cool and like to draw!” Says Harris.
5th grade Isadora Phoenix who got into VA (YEAH!) is a shadow for a kid named Derick Davies, and she said “They just sat us down at the table for my audition and told us to draw things, whatever we wanted. I drew a pumpkin. Then I went to the hallway near the art teachers room and got interviewed, I think VA I really like it, I think it is amazing and the teacher is really cool and strict, which is cool cause I need a strict teacher.” She says.
“My Favorite art piece is probably the time I drew a picture of birds with human feet and high heels,” says Birkholz. “we are learning about self-portraits and the anatomy of a human face. And I really like drawing people.” Says Harris. “I don't have one” Say’s Min. “A portrait of my friend” Says Burbaker.
One thing They all agreed on was that they all want to keep drawing and do visual arts after OSA. Well that wraps it up folks. See ya.
