Ice skating is an official elective art for OSA. After years of debating on if it should be an elective art, The Oakland Ice Center has just agreed to give students this opportunity. Ice skating was an option in 2012 but was revoked in 2015 due to how expensive equipment cost and safety reasons.
So why would it be affordable now? Well, after raising money, they’ve finally made enough to host this as an elective for Wednesday. Because it is so expensive, the school can only afford once a week for everyone that wants to participate so the school is planning to host more events and fundraisers to make money.
Dylan Yoaches, a 7th-grade vocal student has said he is excited to see the shows. mentioning that it will be a good opportunity for students in OSA. Ice skating would be a good addition because during PE everyone loves going.
Gabbi Luevano, a 7th grade Fashion student, claims that it would be fun but could also be a bit risky due to injuries. Overall, though, she thinks it would be a great addition to OSA, and that many kids around the Bay may want to join OSA for an opportunity on the ice.
While it was a hard decision, the Ice Center agreed happily. When time for their art, at 9:50 AM, students joining the Ice Skating pathway will join together in the Student Center and be led across the street by their instructors: Melanie lopez and Jon’Cuavious Lomont, two professionals in ice skating who have agreed to teach these gifted students in their free time. The elective will officially open next school year, when electives take place.
