Sixth grade OSA Vocal student Dylan Yoaches hasn’t had any negative experiences yet and says the community seems great. Yoaches said that the first quarter was hard in the beginning, but he quickly got adjusted to the changes and now really loves the school. “I wanted to go to OSA because It seemed like a unique school, so I checked it and saw Vocal as an option and immediately wanted to go,” said Yoaches.
Yoaches does have a few ways that could have made the experience easier, however, including less commotion in the halls and a safer environment. In Vocal class, Yoaches has had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new methods for singing. Yoaches chose the art sub pathway Vocal because he has always loved it and wanted to pursue it as much as he could.
Sixth grade Literary Arts Student Ruby Deetz said that her first quarter was overwhelming at first but it gradually got easier. “Something OSA could do to make the environment a bit more friendly is to make emotional support easier to reach,” Deetz said. “So far I have learned a lot of new things such as learning to organize research and manipulate words better.''Deetz wanted to go to OSA when her older sister told her how nice everyone is and how much fun she had at OSA.
Sixth grade Social Science and English teacher Bryan Breitung says that the first quarter was difficult because of a technology problem with chromebooks and phones, but beside that it has been good. Breitung says that he enjoyed getting to learn his students’ different personalities, as well as learning their strengths and weaknesses. Breitung says that from what he was able to see, the new sixth graders are ready to be back in a classroom and learn.
Fashion Design student Gabby Luevano says she has not had any negative experiences so far as an incoming 6th grader, and really enjoys OSA. Luevano says it has been a really big adjustment from her old school because there are now different teachers for each subject but beside that it’s been pretty similar. Luevano says she really likes doing Fashion Design because she gets to do what she loves. “What made me want to do fashion design is when I was seven, I got a toy where I could draw outfits and I have loved it ever since,” said Luevano.
OSA Math and Science teacher Daniel Qiu says that the new sixth graders have been doing really well and have gotten used to their classes. Qiu said that the sixth graders have made friends and gotten comfortable at OSA. “The first quarter has been a bit rocky and it was hard to tell where everyone was at but overall it has gone really well,'' said Qui.
OSA Fashion Design teacher Linda Riccardi says that so far the new sixth graders have fit right in and made a lot of cool designs. Riccardi said that her only concern is that they have yet to experience how quickly quarter two passes by because of all the holidays and days off. “This year's first quarter was very smooth and my students and I have a great rhythm and rapport together. My only real challenge right now is not having a big enough space for my students to really work in the way I would like them to,” said Riccardi.
Physical Education teacher Jeff Foster says that so far into the first quarter, the sixth graders have made friends and are having fun. “The only problem that has occurred is that there has been a chromebook and phone problem, which is now mostly resolved but still happens every once in a while,” said Foster. “Overall quarter one has been great and they have learned to navigate around downtown as a group,” Foster explained.
