¨OSA decided to do homecoming as a way for students to show their school spirit and to learn more about the school.¨

One student, Maren Barzell-Weber said, “Homecoming isn’t really important because it has no meaning at our school.” At the time this made since, but the reasoning for homecoming made a lot more sense after talking to a member of the student council.
Homecoming tends to take place after the first football game of the season. Because of this old tradition, most people see homecoming as a dance that’s meant for schools that have football and if you go to OSA, you know we don’t have football or any kind of sports. Student Council saw it differently. OSA decided to do homecoming as a way for students to show their school spirit and to learn more about the school.
Homecoming ended up being a fun experience for all high schoolers that went. While talking to Destiny Perkins, a member of the student council, she said, “Many people get homecoming confused with traditional high school sports events, but really homecoming is based on school spirit. So OSA is having a homecoming because it’s not only something different, but it’s a way to learn about the alumni culture.” This made it a lot more clear to me why we’re having a homecoming. Homecoming doesn’t have to be involved with sports at all.
After homecoming happened, in my interview with Jada White she said, “Honestly, homecoming was pretty much just a normal dance.” As I continued to talk with her she told me that the dance wasn’t really specific to OSA culture and there weren’t any activities that wouldn’t happen at a normal dance. So overall, homecoming probably could have been a good way to show school spirit and to be more involved with the school. And even though homecoming didn’t end up exactly how it was intended to, it still ended up being a fun event.
