One of the fun things about celebrating Halloween is dressing up. Lots of people dressed up this year at OSA. Some people went as funny things, others their favorite character in a book or movie, and some wore scary costumes.
I asked Natalia Kass, a sixth grader at OSA in the visual arts emphasis, what she wore for Halloween and I found out that she dressed up as “Max” from the children’s book, Where The Wild Things Are. She decided she was going to be this, after finding the book in her stack of books while trying to find a good book to read. She found the book and thought Hey Halloween is coming up! Maybe I should be this for Halloween.
Kass wore “A white onesie with gold foam, a sparkly crown with brown trim around the bottom of the crown, and a big puffy tail that’s around three feet long and it’s gray, and I’m also gonna have white gloves,” she said. “My dad made a crown when he was thirty and was the same character I’m gonna be, and then he made it smaller for my brother who wore it a few years ago and my little brother was the same character as my dad,and now I'm gonna wear the same crown but I made it a little bit bigger.”
Kass had wanted to be this character because she had three copies of the book and her mom loved it, too. “Last year I dressed up with a friend, my friend was a stoplight and her legs were the crosswalk and I was a car,” she said. “I was a smart car and everyone thought I was a taxi.” Kass went trick or treating, and her favorite holiday is Halloween.
I was wondering what others did for Halloween so I also asked Trevor Walton. He celebrates Halloween because he really enjoys dressing up in costumes and he enjoys seeing everyone else in their costume and wondering what they are gonna be for Halloween. I asked if he went trick-or-treating and he replied,“I used to do trick or treating but now usually I just stay at home. I love Halloween because I can still be in my costume watching TV with my family and I just enjoy that. It's really fun seeing my friends in their costumes, to get surprised and see ‘oh who is this person gonna be or who is that person gonna be.’ It’s just a lot of fun.”
Walton dressed up as basketball player Kevin Durant. He described how Durant had gotten hurt and how he wants to support him. He feels that even though he is on a different team, the Nets, Durant as a player is still great.
I then interviewed Leah Upton, an eight grader here at OSA. She is in the Literary Arts emphasis and she celebrates Halloween by going to her friend’s houses, eating dinner, and going trick-or-treating. “Next year I will be in highschool so I wanted to have my last year of trick or treating to have a sort of jokey costume,” she said.
Upton went as Shrek. She made her costume made with a swim cap to make her hair not visible and make a headband with the Shrek ears attached. She described it as a joke-sort of costume. Her costume was a DIY costume: she even made the ears for the headband. She is going to also be wearing his outfit, the white shirt, and his vest.
Upton wanted to make her costume herself, saying, “It is just a lot easier and it adds a bit of creativity I think.”
I asked Upton what her favorite holiday was and she answered,“I think Christmas is my favorite. Not because we celebrate it for religious reasons but because we celebrate it as a family and it is always fun.”
Next I interviewed Piper Stuip, a sixth grader at OSA. Stuip explained that she doesn’t have any special traditions that she does for Halloween, and usually does the normal Halloween traditions. She said that for Halloween she will be going as a character from one of her favorite TV shows, Hush.
“I’m going to dress as the character, my costume will have me wearing a black robe with a white collar type of things. I'm going to wear gray makeup since the character is dead,” she said, also adding that the character steals people’s hearts and they are unable to scream because they are silent.
Last year, Stuip had an equally diabolic costume.“Well, I was really into this series called Percy Jackson so I decided to be Hades. Hades has blue flames on his head so I spray painted my hair blue and put it up to make it look like flames. I also bought a black piece of fabric and I made a shawl,” she said. Stuip’s favorite holiday is Halloween because she got her dog on Halloween so she felt that Halloween was special to her and because of how Halloween itself is just fun in general.
Sixth grader Milo Trejo dressed up as a bloody Vsco boy. Vsco is a trend that has been going on for awhile now. A Vsco girl could be seen wearing an oversized t-shirt and short shorts making it seem that there was nothing under the long oversized t-shirt. A Vsco girl must always be seen with a reusable bottle and straw to save the turtles. Milo said he had all the essentials and had the iconic vsco phrase “and i oop” written in fake blood.
A lot of people love Halloween and all of the fun traditions that Halloween follows with, especially at OSA! Dressing up for Halloween is always fun and getting candy is too.
