May is here, and with May comes the end of the school year. For many students at OSA, this was their very first year. Everyone I interviewed had different opinions about certain things but often agreed about others.
One of the people I interviewed is Lana Richard. Richard in 6th-grade literary artist. She claimed her first year at OSA was good but it didn’t live up to her expectations. Richard explains why; "[It] hasn’t really met my expectation [because] I didn’t think the building would look like this and I thought it would be bigger. [I also thought] people would be [quieter]." While OSA didn’t live up to her expectations, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Another interviewee Kyra Easterday is a 6th-grade vocalist. Easterday’s experience at OSA has not lived up to her expectations, according to her it’s been even better than how she imagined. On the subject, Easterday enthused “[It’s] been a lot better than I ever thought it would be it’s been incredible to be able to spend so much time [learning] about my art. [Including] my choir knowledge which I had none of, to my music theory knowledge which I had very little of.” Easterday also thoroughly enjoyed OSA’s Intersession saying things such as “[It] was awesome I wish my old school had [Intersession].”
Richard also agreed that OSA’s Intersession was her favorite part of the year stating; “My favorite part [of the year] has probably been Intersession. I really liked when we went to the zoo. I didn’t have any friends there but I got to see the animals.” Richard also enjoyed attending science club at lunch.
Even though Easterday and Richard enjoyed many things about the OSA school year there were some things that they didn’t enjoy. Richard said that her least favorite part of the OSA school year was “When we had nothing to do in class and we are just sitting there and in certain classes, I have nothing to do and then I get bored.”
Easterday’s least favorite part of the school year was more focused on her emphasis. On the subject, she said “The necessity for the teachers to be constantly yelling at you during vocal because the teachers would spend eighty percent of the time yelling at the students” Easterday also really disliked the behavior contract in vocals. Easterday also added on to this saying “[I wish] I would’ve known how loud the vocal department is because if I would have known that, I would have been a lot less surprised.”
Another student I interviewed is Gianna Toscano. Toscano is in 6th-grade visual artist. Some highlights of the year for her were the art shows. She explains the reasoning behind this as the fact that “we get to make tons of things” and that it is “really fun because we usually make more things [and art] than we usually do.” Toscano describes herself as not very social so she wishes that she would’ve known more people so “It wouldn’t have been so scary.” Toscano like many other students also disliked testing for reasons such as “Because [testing] was stressful and if you didn’t finish you had to be taken out of class.”
6th graders aren’t the only people who started a new school year at OSA though. Makenna Arase an 8th-grader literary artist. She claims that her first year at OSA had its pros and cons. “[There were] both negative and positive [things] at OSA. There is gossip [and] a lot of drama and that lived up to my expectations.” Arase also came here for the writing program and says that it lived up to her expectations. Arase’s favorite part of the school year was when she wrote a book in literary arts. On the subject Arase stated; “[My favorite part of the year] was probably when I finished writing this book back in October, and I left it until the last day. Because I like to procrastinate and I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I did it in 2 days. Arase was mostly pleasantly surprised she was shocked by the fact that there was so much homework.” On the subject, Arase said, “There was a drastic amount of changes [of assignment] I got from [my old school] the number of assignments and read section one through ten in the textbook and then maybe homework the next day and I just really felt the difference.”
All in all, first time OSA, despite small problems here and there, students seemed to be generally happy with their experience and are happy to be in a school like OSA.
