Within OSA’s art community most people specialize in more than one art. After one art form experience, there are so many other branches of art that are available to you. Most musicians start out with piano and move on to other instruments, including vocals. Dancers schooled in ballet have no trouble moving on to jazz, hip hop, or modern. Visual artists have an easier time with set design and statues/models after they have been drawing and painting for a long time. It is like learning a second language, after you know it, the third language is easier to learn. It is not a coincidence that many artists are multi-talented. Some students are considering leaving their current emphasis and auditioning for a new one.
One of those students is Satine Courtade-Pappalardo. She is a sixth grader in Vocal Music auditioning for dance. Courtade-Pappalardo has many different arts practices such as, dance, theater, piano, ukulele, recorder, and her current OSA art, the Vocal Department. Courtade- Pappalardo says that vocal music, “Just wasn’t what I expected.” She further went on to explain that she thought they would get to pick their own music and songs.
For Courtade-Pappalardo’s original audition she learned a song in preparation. Before the dance audition, she says she will stretch. To Courtade-Pappalardo, the most appealing part of the Dance pathway is the practice that you get everyday.
“Compared to other dance studios, [the] OSA [dance department] is really, really great,” she said with a smile. Satine says that she probably will transfer into the Dance emphasis if she gets in, and looks forward to better technique and greater flexibility.
Mo’Ney McDaniel is a Visual Art student who has been creating art since second grade. She really liked her experience in Visual, but says that there was not a lot of time and limited supplies. McDaniel is auditioning for Digital Media because she really likes photography and she is better at digital drawing. After submitting her portfolio of paintings she came to the school expecting a regular art class but with longer periods. The class turned out to have much more materials and different art styles. McDaniel concludes if she were to get into Digital Media she might go.
I am also auditioning for a different emphasis (dance) because I have been dancing for over eight years and would enjoy a change in my school schedule. To anyone who is auditioning for an emphasis, either to transfer to a different emphasis or to get into the school, I wish you good luck.
