"Ms. Pontecorvo is currently the only academics teacher at OSA who teaches 6th,7th, and 8th grade." -- chiara Kovac
Ms. Pontecorvo is currently the only academics teacher at OSA who teaches 6th,7th, and 8th grade. She hasn’t taught any other grades because, “Middle school still knows how to play, but they still understand complicated things. High school, not so much,” she said, laughing.
Ms. Pontecorvo has taught at OSA for 4 years. Before teaching at OSA, she was a substitute at many other schools. When she first came here, she taught ELA, but social studies is more of her thing.
Comparing OSA to other schools Ms. Pontecorvo said, ”OSA is a very special place. You guys are lucky to be here. Because (at) OSA, people listen to the way your heart works. Not many schools do that.” She also noted that, “At OSA, everyone has a motivation to go to school, besides the fact that their parents said go.”
Her most memorable experience at OSA was “The Heart of Oakland” performance. Heart of Oakland was a schoolwide performance hosted at the Fox Theatre, featuring Oakland-inspired pieces from all nine OSA emphases. Ms. Pontecorvo found this performance exciting because she got to see a little bit of what everyone was doing without having to go to separate art shows.
Ms. Pontecorvo’s childhood dream was always to be a teacher. Her family, her aunts, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents were all teachers. Her favorite part about teaching is watching someone learn and understand. She loves teaching social studies, but if she had to pick an emphasis to study, she thinks Dance or Vocal Music would be fun.
