"There are two main types of clubs at OSA, there are clubs for MARGINALIZED groups of people, called affirmation groups such as Brothers of Color, QT Club, BSU, APIU, and many others. Then there are clubs for hobbies and groups of like-minded people who may share interests, such as Nerd Herd, Fashion Club and Garden Club." -- olu thomas, 8th grade
Anyone looking to join a club can email the club leaders or just check what room it is in and check it out. Some clubs are for highschool students only or just for middle school students.
Why are clubs important? Especially at an arts school like OSA where students have so much on their plates? Well, it can be hard to get work done at school, to stay focused and to be driven to do your best. Clubs can help students to feel at home at OSA, especially new students.
What is the process for starting or joining a club? “Each club has to have a charter which states the purpose of there club and why it would be important to be on campus to meet each week and build community, and if it is a affinity group, to help people to feel more comfortable on campus,” said Ms DeRoos, OSA’s Dean of Students. DeRoos is in charge of organizing all the clubs and is currently planning a Club Fair.
I interviewed some students looking to start a club about what they knew in terms of how to start a club, who to talk to and what to do.
“ I want to start a club around the environment, I know how to start a club and who to talk to,” said eighth grader Lindsey Higgins.
Sixth grader Rafi Ponet wants to start a basketball club and told me in detail what he needs to do to start his club.
In terms of activities, clubs can do there are many options from just chatting to playing games and other fun activities. “Clubs have not done many off campus activities but that does not mean it can not happen,” says Ms. DeRoos
To sum it all up, clubs in OSA are an integral part of building the community and helping students have a support system with students and teachers to make our experience here at OSA much better.
