As soon as December comes, it’s that time of year! There are a lot of things people do to get in the Christmas spirit. One thing people do is blast Christmas music. There's a large variety of Christmas songs a person could listen to, but I wanted to look a little deeper. I took it upon myself to ask some of the OSA students and staff what their favorite Christmas songs are.
Trevor Walton, a Literary Arts student in 6th grade likes Christmas music, but he doesn’t listen to it often. His favorite Christmas song is “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is Trevor’s favorite because it really puts him in the spirit when he decorates the Christmas tree with his family. “The song is very nice and peaceful,” he said. His favorite lyric from the song is the chorus. He’s been singing it since he was 9 years old! While “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a special Christmas song for Trevor, Charlie Brown’s “Christmas Is Here” is one of his least favorites. “The high pitched voices are annoying,” he said and I happen to agree with Trevor.
When asking Grace Triantafyllos, a Literary Arts student in the 7th grade, if she enjoyed Christmas music I got a hesitant reply. “Kind of. A little bit,” she said. Despite her hesitancy, Grace did not have any trouble thinking about her favorite Christmas song, which is “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. That song is her favorite because it is more of a pop song compared to the other slow, traditional Christmas songs. “Oh no. I think I just like the entire song I guess,” replied Grace when asked what her favorite lyric was. Grace has been listening to “All I Want For Christmas Is You” for the past two years. While that song is her favorite, along with many others, Grace’s least favorite Christmas song is “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Gene Autry. She doesn’t like it because she’s heard it too many times. “It’s kinda just not all that great, too” she said.

Triece Kushner, another 6th grader in Literary Arts also likes Christmas music. Triece listens to Christmas music because it reminds her of her uncle, who passed when he was a kid around Christmas time. Her uncle loved Christmas music, so she listens to it to make her feel better. Triece’s favorite Christmas song is “Last Christmas” by Wham. It’s her favorite because it was her uncle’s favorite Christmas song. The chorus along with the whole song has been her favorite since she was born. Triece is so jolly that she can’t even bring herself to dislike any Christmas song.
Ms. Zinger, who teaches Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 at OSA, does enjoy Christmas music, but only to an extent. She absolutely doesn’t start listening to Christmas music until December hits. She likes Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and F. Sanata, but her all-time favorite is “Winter Wonderland” by Michael Buble. It’s her favorite because it’s her first song she learned to play on the piano when she was a kid. Everytime Ms. Zinger had a performance she would warm up by playing Winter Wonderland. “It was a stress reliever for me,” she said. After some thinking Ms. Zinger was able to decide that her favorite line from the song is:
He’ll say,
Are you married?
We’ll say, No man
But you could do the job when your in town.
“Winter Wonderland” has been Ms. Zinger’s favorite song since she was 10 years old. Remember how she said she likes Christmas music to an extent? Yeah, well Ms. Zinger’s least favorite Christmas song is “Frosty The Snowman” by Gene Autry, because the idea of a snowman coming to life is creepy.
You’d think everyone likes Christmas music. Listening to a nice, jolly, upbeat song to get them in the spirit. Well, everyone is different. Julie Horenstein, a 12th grader in Literary Arts, doesn’t like Christmas music. She used to work in retail in the stores during the holidays and would hear Christmas music all the time. Julie thinks the music is really overplayed and I agree 100%.
