"Do you celebrate Valentine's day with someone special? Well, here is some news about Valentines day that you might not know, mainly how some people want to get rid of it"--DARIA Oxley, 6th grade
Valentines day has always been a celebrated holiday, it takes place on the 14th of February.
Valentines day hasn’t always been about love, it used to be celebrated for fertility and fruitfulness. It wasn't until the high middle ages, when writers like Shakespeare and Chaucer romanticized the holiday with literature. Valentine's day is also considered a feast day and not a major holiday, because Pope Paul VI, removed it from the calendar of major holidays in 1969. “It was said that Valentine's Day is important but I think it isn’t because Valentine's day is kind of like everyday just a little more special,” This was written in an article by the dailymeal.com.
How Valentine's Day came upon its name has always been a curiosity, but it turns out it was likely named after two decapitated priests. In the third century, it was said from various sources from thedailymeal.com that “a roman priest had cured a man's daughter from blindness, and when the emperor heard of the miracle, he had the family executed, and the priest decapitated. A similar tale is told about another Valentinus who did the same and he was also decapitated.” Valentines day got the name from Valentinus. And Valentines day isn’t all about love and giving, it used to involve whipping.
During Lupercalia, some animals would be sacrificed and skinned to celebrate, and their hides would be turned into whips. It was a ritual that used to be done every year and women would line up to get lashed by the whip thinking that when they did this they would become more attractive, so each and every year they would line up to get whipped thinking it was good for them, but all it was really doing was hurting them.
Valentine's day is also based on Pagan rituals. Pagan rituals have always taken place on February the 14th, same day as Valentines day, they celebrated to purify the city and promote wellness and fertility so it would grow in people and in money.
Valentine's day is a special day but it is best to cook at home and not go out to restaurants unless you booked a table. Why? Because Valentine's day is after Mother's day, and a big date night, restaurants are the busiest and the most crowded. Between overpriced food, unhappy staff, and rushed service, it is better to just cook a meal at home instead of going out to a fancy restaurant.
Valentine's day is not always about finding new people, what if you're already in a relationship? But it can also ruin current relationships. During Valentine's Day you may think over your relationship and re-examine it, to make sure you still have that special connection. And Valentine's day may be special but actually half the people don't celebrate it. They just give out cards and that's all, that is also why people are thinking of removing Valentines day, because Valentine's Day should really be any day. Why they are thinking that is because you don't just have to send out a card on that particular day, you could just send one anytime, and from the two sources below, it said that “Valentines day may be special, but it's also stereotypical and very overpriced just to buy something for your loved one”. Why that is, is because stores try to make a profit from the holiday, so they make their food or gifts more expensive so that people are almost forced to buy it when it’s overpriced, why their forced is because, why wouldn't you get someone you care about a present on a holiday?
