Every year, 6th graders at Oakland School for the Arts get to go on a trip to the downtown library on 14th Street. This year students will be walking there on September 25th for Ms Herron's class and October 2nd for Ms Bradburn's. I asked 7th graders for their opinion on the trip last year and current 6th graders to see if they were excited.
“Yes, I liked this trip,” said Cece Fontaine, a 7th grade Literary Arts student, remembering many funny memories from the actual walk to the library. “Someone tried to ride a Lime scooter and it was funny because they actually rode it.” She liked the teen section and playing on the computers.
“The children section was cool and so was the teen section,’’ she said.
When asked what she thought about OSA not having a library, she responded that “Arts takes up too much time and there is no room.” At OSA, students have two hours of arts for middle schoolers and three for high schoolers.
Chiara Kovac, 7th grade Literary Arts student thought that the trip was ok. “It was a really long walk,” Kovac remembered. She thought that the library was cool and that the teen section was “cozy.” She thought that a library was very important in a school. “When I first came here, it was really weird to not have a library. Encouraging us to read and not having a library was… I don’t know, just weird,” Kovac responded. She thought that a library could be a place to study.
Hazel Phillips, another 7th grade Literary Arts student really liked the trip because she loves books and OSA doesn’t have a library. Phillips thinks that it sends a “bad message” not to have one, adding that she “Would spend all my time there, after school and lunch.” She also said that the trip would have made her want to go to the library more often, but she already does.
Isabella Schainker, a 6th grade Literary Arts Student said that “I’m not really excited.I never check out from the library because I read so fast. There’s really no point for me,” Schainker said. She expects this trip to have lots of books that she has already read. She doesn’t like school libraries because she thinks that the books are too easy.
Piper Stuip, another 6th grade Literary Arts student, thinks that this trip is going to be chaotic”. When asked if she was excited, Stuip responded, “I don’t know much about the trip, but it is a good idea.” She doesn’t check books out from the library because her older sister gives her books.
Sixth grader Vanessa Hernandez, a Literary Arts student, also expects the trip to be crazy. Hernandez believes that because the walks from OSA to another place gets crazy. She hasn’t been to the library since 2nd grade, however, is “very excited to hang out with my friends on this trip.”
