MoNey McDaniel, a student in Visual Art, and Isla Sofya, a student in Theatre, are the new OSA 6th grade Representatives, elected after giving convincing speeches at Sweets Ballroom on August 31st. McDaniel and Sofya got the most votes and now will be representing all of the 6th grades. Both candidates promised big things, from textbooks to Chromebooks, and even more diversity. I sat down with McDaniel and Sofya to talk about their promises and what they think they need at OSA.
Jayden Baasansuren: What do you think OSA needs to change?
MoNey McDaniel: Maybe have more clubs to have more people going to different clubs and for it to be more diverse.
Isla Sofya: We need to change the way we get our information because my friends keep asking about the charter renewal and it's an important thing.
JB: When are you going to make changes to the community?
MM: Well we are hoping to make changes to the community next month in October.
IS: Well the student council and I are working to make changes sometime soon hopefully and I can not make any promises.
JB: Are you going to bring up the things we want or need?
MM: Actually both but if we need to choose one I will choose the thing we need.
IS: I hope. Textbooks and Chromebooks are very expensive it might be a guaranteed yes or no for the vending machine but it will be likely no for the vending machines also there will be no possible way we will get vending machines.
JB: How will you work with the 6th-grade rep?
MM: We’re friends so [it isn’t] that hard. We are going to compromise.
IS: Me and MoNey talk a lot about the student council for school for friends and during lunch MM:and break. We talk a lot so we are ready for the student council meetings.
JB: Are you going to work with the 6th-grade rep or be independent?
MM: I will work with the other rep so we can have better ideas together
IS:I'm going to be independent but I will also work together but at the same time I will be independent
JB: What ideas are you excited to bring to the student council meeting?
MM: I'm excited to bring ideas like the dance and the fundraisers to the meeting.IS: For some 6th graders that need help we can get a buddy system but [already some 6th graders are used to school already]
JB: Are you going to keep your promises with the new textbooks and more fundraisers?
MM: I will keep my promise and hopefully get new textbooks and when we do fundraisers we can earn enough money for Chromebooks and textbooks
IS: I do not have any promises yet we haven't gone over how much funding we have.
JB: What are your thoughts on the dance?
MM: I was thinking we can do a fall festival or a costume dance: The theme will be orange and black because it’s really close to Halloween, we have to make an agreement that everyone will wear the costumes or the orange and black theme.
IS: The dance theme is undetermined but I feel like a dance is a good thing to have in a school like this because everyone has fun like and also its fun to hang out with your friends during that time and me and MoNey were thinking like a Halloween costume party another thing that I was thinking was that a glow party and like neon [would be fun].
JB: Do you have any experiences with the student council and if so how?
MM:Well last year I was the treasurer of the student council for fifth grade and we had a bunch of clubs during lunch and it was really successful.
IS: I do; in fifth grade, I was on the leadership team and we planned all the school dances and parties and stuff like that.
Conclusion
Well now we now that what MoNey and Isla are going to change and what is going to happen soon and if you have something to say at the student council you can come to the meeting on Monday but you will not be able to vote and MoNey and Isla will bring great thing to the council and hopefully we get the thing we need and start more fundraisers.
