"Are these underpants-on-the-outside, clunky suit, buff saviors really all we think they are?" -- Maia Cavagnolo 6th
The following article is a special May investigation by the OSA Shallot staff, aiming to bring you the very best of the campus' fake news.
A red figure zooms past you, floating on air and shooting fire from their arms. It’s Captain America! Ant-man! Captain Marvel! Deadpool! Countless Marvel superheroes like Spiderman and Ironman have been cherished throughout the ages. But are these underpants-on-the-outside, clunky suit, buff saviors really all we think they are? According to a countless number of your favorite Disney Princesses, no, they aren’t. This article dives deeper into why these beloved princesses dislike Marvel superheroes so much, and what we can do to help princesses be a bit more appreciated.
Ariel, who starred in The Little Mermaid, was one of the handful of Disney characters who was okay with being interviewed. “I think Marvel gets too much credit. They make tons of not very impressive shows and movies, and too many of them. They should slow down and think about the people who are going to be watching these movies!”
But Rapunzel (Tangled) doesn’t have a direct hate for Marvel. “I don’t watch much television. [Marvel is] definitely not my favorite, I’m more of an animated movie kind of person, but I don’t hate it. I just mildly dislike it.”
When Rapunzel was asked what her worst experience was with disrespect, she says, “I think my movie, Tangled, is actually meant for ages 0-13-ish, but older kids don’t even give me a chance, which I find as the most disrespectful thing.”
Jasmine (Aladdin) has experiences with kids not realizing who she really is. “People see me as just Aladdin’s wife. That movie is just ONE part of my life. I am ONLY with him when I play in Aladdin. Like, kids don’t seem to understand that the Disney characters aren’t just trapped in a screen playing the same thing over and over. We have a life outside of television!”
But Ariel has had drastically different experiences. “I think many princesses get disrespected. But I got lucky. I’ve never had really horrible things happen to me.” Ariel talks about how while many other Disney characters have been through a lot, they still bounce back. “I think It’s really amazing how, even after all that scorn, they still get up and keep doing their shows.” Ariel continues, “And it really pays off!”
While the Disney Princesses have much to say about Marvel, Marvel just offhandedly hates Disney.
“Disney is just a low-level animation platform,” says Spiderman. “If you want the good stuff, Marvel is the place to go.”
And many of the heroes agree. “Disney? Those princesses are trash. Nobody would want to watch anything called ‘Tangled’ or ‘The Little Mermaid,’” scoffs Ironman.
“I mean, who gave them permission to poop the party?” an outraged Captain America says.
But the superheroes have bigger impacts than they know on Disney princesses. “Sometimes I want to quit my job and stop acting [in The Princess and the Frog] just to show people – and Marvel – that when they don’t have these classic movies, they don’t know what to watch with their kids,” Tiana rants.
But, even after everything, the Disney Princesses are still doing their movies. “I’m so glad that many Disney movies and princesses have become famous and well-known over the years!” Ariel joyfully remarks.
So, maybe, next time you’re getting ready for a movie, consider paying respects to the characters who were with you for your entire childhood, and watch some of your favorite Disney classics.
