In this article, there are picture and board books that are centered around holidays including Kwanzaa, Christmas, and Hanukkah. Enjoy!
The first book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 8 Days of Chanukah by Eric Carle. This sweet, counting board book has many fun activities for new readers to partake in while still establishing all of the amazing and fun traditions of Hanukkah. Singing fun songs, lighting the menorah, and spinning the dreidel are a couple of examples of what this enchanting book has in store! This board book is great for toddlers and babies still learning about the traditions of Hanukkah.
The second is Li’l Rabbit’s Kwanzaa, by Donna L. Washington, a heart warming book about Li’l Rabbit and his Kwanzaa dilemma. Granna Rabbit is sick, so his family isn’t going to celebrate his favorite part of Kwanzaa; Karamu, a big feast. He decides to search for something special for Granna Rabbit so she can still celebrate Karamu. He meets other supporting characters like Groundhog and the frogs while searching in places like the pond and the field, but never finds anything for Granna Rabbit. He gets sad, because he thinks he is too little and immature to help. But then he realizes that maybe all he needs is some help from his beloved friends and family. This book invites readers from ages four to eight to celebrate the wonderful traditions of Kwanzaa.
Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree, by Robert Barry is the third book. It is about uplifting Mr. Willowby, who is ready to bring the Christmas cheer! But…his Christmas tree doesn’t fit in his living room! Follow along with this fun story as he cuts off the very tip of the tree to make it fit in his parlor. And it’s perfect. What he doesn’t know is that he just did a very good thing for the forest around him. Watch as the top of the tree travels around the forest homes of animals of all kinds, and how it brings joy and holiday spirit to everyone! This book has a wide age range of three to seven.
The fourth book, The Best Gift for Bear, by Jennifer A. Bell, is a sweet book about the friendship of Hedgehog and Bear. Hedgehog feels that she owes her best friend Bear an amazing gift, because he taught her about butterflies and ice skating and many other things she enjoys. But she can’t seem to find a gift good enough for someone as amazing as Bear. When Hedgehog finally finds inspiration for her gift, it doesn’t exactly go according to plan. This heartwarming book is perfect for ages from three to ten.
Last, there is Sadie’s Almost Marvelous Menorah by Jamie Korngold. Sadie is so excited to show her family the beautiful menorah she made. But… whoops! She trips and falls! The spectacular menorah she put so much work into shatters, leaving her feeling devastated. But then she realizes the shamash candle is not broken, and a new tradition is born. This book is good for kids around kindergarten who have just started reading and need colorful pictures to illustrate the book.
