"We all know what we are thinking during this time, but what about our pets?" --Lana richard
We all know what we are thinking during this time, but what about our pets?
Different animals like different things, some may like being at home alone with no one else to bother them, but others may like all the attention they get. My dogs like getting extra walks around the neighborhood, despite the fact they don’t get to visit with other dogs and people. Would staying home make your pets bigger, from getting more treats, or would the treats wear off from all the walks they get?
According to Isabella Schainker, “My cat does not appreciate us being home for many more hours than usual, he likes his peace and quiet, but he also enjoys spending time with the family, and often just wants to rest or watch birds through the window.”
However, dogs and cats are different. Dogs are more social, and they want to be around you, and get attention. Cats like that too, but not all the time, they like to have space, and do their own thing.
Leah Upton has two rats and two dogs. She thinks that it is fair to her pets that she is home all the time and that, “My pets actually like it because dogs and rats are very social and they love the attention from people.”
Holly Young, a sixth grader at OSA said “ It’s probably really annoying to have us home all the time. But it's not our fault. I don't think they're angry but I think they don't think it's fair that we are home and in their space.” If Young could talk to her cats she would “ tell them that we are home to stay safe so you have someone to take care of you. I would also tell them that cats can get the coronavirus, and that's why you can't go outside.”
Everyone I talked to said that it was fair to their pet for being home all the time, and they got to go on walks more, and spend more time with their family.
“If I was my pet, I would enjoy being able to see my family more and going on walks,” said Halima Watson, a 7th grader from Edna Brewer Middle School.
Wild animals are also liking this time, according to The-world-is-healing “Empty roads and beaches are being taken over by wild animals.” But when we go back to going outside everyday, and driving our cars, will it be the same as before?
When I asked Schainker what she would think about during this time if she was her pet, she said that she would enjoy it, “because life wouldn’t be any different than an indoor cat like hers.”
When comparing some animals to people they aren’t that different, some people want to be with others most of the time, while others like to keep to themselves, and do their own thing.
