When you hear the word “Halloween,” what comes to mind first? Trick or treating, carving pumpkins, haunted houses? While those things are all great activities, nothing beats hanging out with your friends and family, gathering around the TV, and watching your favorite scary movies. But the biggest dilemma? What movie to watch, of course!
First on the list is Scream.
Scream was released in 1996 and is probably the most famous horror movie ever. Scream paved the way for horror movies, and has a perfect mix of horror and comedy, so that it keeps you on the edge of your seat and scared but also chuckling at their funny little jokes, like when a couple described their relationship as being R rated.
The movie that is described by Rotten Tomatoes as “Great and witty,” and “A great movie with a parodistic twist on horror,” revolves around Sidney Prescott who is played by Neve Campbell as she tries to escape a serial killer who wears the now infamous ghost face mask.
All in all Scream is a great movie with amazing acting, and top of the line graphics for the time it was released.
Up next is Carrie.
Based on Stephen King's first published novel, Carrie, is a movie that critics raved about when first released. Rotten Tomatoes says “Carrie is a great movie that belongs in the category of classic horror films, but is also a film that manages to break from that mold and become a film that is higher up than other teen horror films.”
It starts out as a classic Mean Girls scenario showing Carrie White(Sissy Spacek) getting bullied by popular girl Sue Snell(Amy Irving), but then unlike other Mean Girls scenarios Sue gets caught by the gym teacher and gives her a one week detention.
As revenge Sue plans to make Carrie prom queen at the upcoming prom and then bathe her in pigs blood. They chose the wrong girl to mess with however: Carrie uses her telekinesis powers to kill each and every one of them.
Carrie is a classic horror movie who has a great plot twist that leaves watchers on the edge of their seats.
Last is Hocus Pocus.
If you’re looking for a movie that’s a little more PG than the others on this list, then Hocus Pocus is perfect. It’s the perfect mix between comedy, adventure, and shock.
While it did get a dismal rating of 33% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audience reviews are great saying things like “Hocus Pocus is a joyous fantasy comedy adventure with an atmosphere and setting that is just right to get the entire family into Halloween mood.” and “Plenty of jokes, especially when the witches from the 17th century are confronted with the modern world, will entertain young and old viewers in this mildly spooky yet never truly scary tale.”
Hocus Pocus is a great movie for the family that’ll entertain everyone!
All in all, Halloween time is a blast, and even though it’s over it doesn’t mean you can’t watch these beloved favorites again!
