It's that time of year once again, Valentines day. Chocolate sales are booming and even more people are getting cuffed. But not everyone. Some people are staying indoors and eating ice cream because they don't have a special someone. But you're better than that! Don’t fear, single people: I have compiled a list of things to do this Valentine's season other than mope around.

  1. Blast sad songs. When I'm feeling sad I always find myself listening to sad songs. They make me feel more clarified about the situation and more ready to move on.

  2. Have a sleepover with the squad. Face masks, junkfood, netflix, lots of crying and blankets. Friends are more fun to be around anyways. Friends who are single and sad together stay together.

  3. Write valentines cards for friends. Focus on the happiness of friendship rather than the sadness of single life.

  4. Take cute photos with friends. Take your mind off of that one person.

  5. Write rant cards to your ex. It could be anonymous or signed, you don't even need to send it. It helps calm the mind.

  6. Pot a plant. Become a plant parent!

  7. Destroy your ex's photos. Shred them, cut them, burn them, scratch their faces out of photos with you, cut them out of your group photos. They don't deserve to be there with you. You're better than that.

  8. Give your ex a Justin Bieber CD disguised in the CD case of one of their favorite artists. I'm sure they would love it!

  9. Make your teachers valentines! They deserve to be appreciated, too.

  10. Bake with/for your friends! I mean who doesn't like baked goods?

As well as compiling a list, I interviewed some singles about valentines day as well. When asked how it felt to be single on Valentines day, 3 out of 4 people agreed. “I feel I’m at the age where relationships don't really matter, so I would say I don't really care,” said Grace Triantafyllos, an 8th grader in Literary Arts.

Milo Trejo, a 7th grade Literary Arts student, agreed.“It's not even a major holiday. I don’t see why people care.” Joquin Montes, fellow 7th grader disagreed, saying ,“It’s fun. I'm open. But not in a relationship way. Like, um, nevermind.”

Next I asked if there was anything they would recommend fellow singles.

“Mmm you don't need to care about all the lovey stuff,” said Jif Dillemuth, a 7th grade Lit Arts student shifting in his seat. Trejo said something similar,“Uhm y'know just act like it's any other day.”

After that, I asked what they do on Valentines as singles. “I usually give candy to my friends. Platonic love with candy,” Triantafyllos smiled. “I like to hang out with other singles! But not in a weird way... Wait don't quote that it will make me look weird. I'm not weird,” said Montes, a very normal person by the way, not weird at all..

“To me it's like a normal day,” Dillemuth shyly added. “I hang out with friends.”

What are some activities to do when you feel sad, I asked next.  Do you ever feel lonely on Valentines Day? “Obviously eat because eating’s great,” Trejo replied with a snort. Triantafyllos, Montes, and Dillemuth agreed that they didn't really get sad on Valentine's Day because friends make up for it.

Since I'm nosey, my next question was if they are going to ask anybody to be their Valentine—and if so, how are they going to do it?. “Ummm I might ask someone… possibly… Shawn Mendes is still on tour so options are limited y'know,” said Montes. “But we’ll work with what we have.” Trejo strongly disagreed, saying, “Ew no. Nooo thank you.”

“I'm not. If i would though, maybe by not because I'm scared to do it in person,” Dillemuth said nervously. Tryantafyllos agreed, saying “Not planning on it but if I did, I realistically would give them a card and a gift. But if I was living my teen romcom dreams perhaps I would do an acapella serenade.”

Next, I asked when they started caring about Valentines Day. Trejo responded with “Uhm I've ever cared about it and aLwAyS *aHeM* been single.” Montes agreed. “I suppose it was probably in elementary.” Triantafyllos ponderd. Dillemuth agreed with Trejo and Montes by saying “Yeah I don't care. I don't really get the point of Valentines Day.” While some think it's pointless, and some find value we all agreed on one thing: the best part is the candy.
