BORG, an acronym for black out rage gallon, is TikTok’s latest stupid and dangerous trend, popping up in late 2022/early 2023. A BORG is an alcoholic beverage that has become wildly popular among college kids. It consists of half a gallon of water from a gallon jug, while the rest is filled with vodka or another kind of alcohol. In addition, people are adding either energy drinks or electrolytes and in some cases, both.
The logic is that the electrolytes will slow down or cancel out the amount of alcohol consumed. “While the addition of water and electrolytes to the drink helps slow down alcohol consumption and reduces hangovers, the sheer size of the container encourages dangerous binge drinking,” reports the nypost. BORGs commonly have up to 17 shots of alcohol which is very dangerous to be consumed at one time.
“Each jug is labeled with a pun, like ‘Justin BieBORG,’ ‘BORGttega Veneta’ or ‘BORGan Donor,’' says the nytimes. “For some students, a humorous name is as important to a BORG as the electrolytes.” This trend is no different than other trends on TikTok, it's a joke, it doesn't matter if it could be dangerous because you have to do the next big thing.

Over at UMass (University of Massachusetts), ambulances were called all over the campus due to alcohol poisoning on the night of March 4th. Alcohol poisoning is very dangerous and in severe cases, can lead to death. “Consequences of drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. Drinking too much at a quick rate can affect your breathing, heart rate, body temperature, and gag reflex resulting in a potential coma and death.”
“Twenty-eight ambulances had to be called — so many that neighboring towns had to send their emergency vehicles too — as the students participated in what’s known as an annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration called “Blarney Blowout” at the Amherst school,” says the nypost. Twenty eight, is an alarming number, especially because these kids are still in school, many underage. While no one has died, it is always a possibility with that amount of alcohol.
Some may argue that BORGS are a good thing because they are personal drinks. That is definitely an upside because if you have your own, sealed drink, it is less likely for it to be spiked with drugs and sedatives.
Overall, BORGS? Not a smart idea. Alcohol and alcohol poisoning is serious, do not take anything like that lightly.
