Women’s Rights Movement In Afghanistan
Writer: Mariah R.
The Women’s Rights Movement in Afghanistan has been varied throughout history. Women officially became equal to men under the 1964 Constitution. However, these rights were taken away from women in the 1990’s with the rise of s the Taliban
Especially during the later rules, women had slim to no freedom at all. Specifically in the terms of the Civil War Liberties. Ever since the Taliban Regime was removed in late 2001, women’s rights had gradually improved. Under Islamic Republic law, they are now equal to men once again. This is under the 2004 Constitution which was largely based off of the 1964 Constitution.
However, women’s rights are still quite complicated. by a reactionary view on Afghanistan by certain classes in school, particularly ruralites, which continue to cause for International concern. When the Taliban took control of most of Afghanistan in 2021, worry about the future for women in Afghanistan increased.
The U.S. drawdown from Afghanistan includes American diplomats who moved embassy operations to the airport in Kabul. They're now leaving too as the White House decides how to deal with the Taliban.
