The four nights of the RNC came to a close six days ago, yielding many hilarious moments, from claims of Biden supposedly being a trojan horse for socialism to Ivanka Trump admitting her dad’s tweets are “a bit unfiltered” we saw it all.--Lola Christ, 7th grade
The RNC, or the Republican National Convention, takes place every election year to determine a President and Vice President to be endorsed by the Republican Committee. In addition, it is meant to unify the party and set forth an official presidential campaign. They have held this convention every four years since 1856, when they first they elected a Rebulican National Committee which is responsible for holding and managing the RNC.
At the RNC people make speeches endorsing who the committee is going to pick, which goes on for four nights. Each night there is a select group of people who speak on the nominee’s behalf until the nominee themself makes an acceptance speech. This year boasted the longest speech ever given, clocking in at a little over an hour.
This year’s RNC featured speakers mostly unknown—half of which I don’t believe were even politicians, and of the select few that were, I’m certain were widely unknown to the public. Out of the few political and business speakers, many were minorities Trump's campaign manipulated into believing that Trump would do anything to help their causes and beliefs. For example Tim Scott. Although when first watching without context you may not notice that he’s clearly just a pawn for Trump's campaign. Why do you think he spoke so much on the brutal deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd as if Trump had shown any remorse for the incidents? It’s a tactic to make you think even for a second the Trump administration would take any action towards reforming the police system.
Furthermore, Trump had all but one of his kids speak at the convention. It’s funny to think about this, considering that while Joe Biden had his two kids introduce him he did not need to have them speak for eighteen minutes to make up for the fact no one else wants to. In fact, so little people wanted to speak on behalf of the President that the Trump Administration had to trick people into doing it. Yes, you read that right. Multiple clips used for the RNC featured people who claimed they were not aware of the filmed clips being used at the RNC. One of the clips is one in which four NYC tenants were interviewed in front of a camera about harsh living conditions they were experiencing, three of whom were completely unaware the footage would be used to bash the mayor and be played during the RNC.
Another incident of this was when a video of five US Citizens getting sworn in played at the RNC, even though one of the people being sworn in hadn’t been informed of this. Although the woman who was uninformed wasn’t mad about the situation it doesn’t mean it wasn’t wrong to not tell her.
Now that you have an idea of who spoke, let’s talk about some of the highlights and speeches from this year. Starting it off strong on night one was Donald Trump Jr, who not only made entirely false claims like Trump having built “the greatest economy our country has ever seen” but also had very bloodshot eyes when going on stage leading the internet to go crazy with memes saying he may have done drugs prior to making the speech. Some pointed out he seemed to have cried a little during the speech. Although it’s highly unlikely he had actually done drugs, it's extremely funny to think about. Trump Jr claims that the lighting had made his eyes appear this way but if this were to have been true it would’ve affected other speakers, which it didn’t. I suppose you can make of this what you wish, but I found it funny.
One of the moments where I personally couldn’t stop laughing was during some highlights from Matt Gaetz speech in which he calls the people saying settle for Biden “Woaktopians.” After this he went on to speak about how the Liberals are making Biden the extra in a movie that is “written directed and directed by others, it's a horror film really.” He then went on to speak about this hypothetical movie using fear tactics many of the speakers used, as well as deliberately referring to America as a she for no apparent reason. This honestly made me feel fairly uncomfortable, I couldn’t explain why but it was just obviously a weird and unnecessary thing to do.
The next moment I wanted to talk about is the speech Kimberly Guilfoyle gave, which was honestly in-and-ofitself something else, but when you compare it to the famous speech Dwight gave in The Office season 2, episode 15, her speech felt comically familiar. The hand movements are nearly identical. She practically screamed her whole speech, and frankly, although her tactics were faciast and fear-mongering I feel bad, I hope her vocal cords are okay.
During the second night the First Lady produced a few funny moments. Her outfit not only looked excessively militarized but her speech was just dull. She also made a number of funny faces and expressions, but at this point we should expect this from her. Another moment came from Dan Crenshaw, who was shown speaking in front of a massive tank, with an eye patch. He slightly resembled a Disney super villain, which isn’t the best look for giving a speech at the RNC. Or is it?
Last but most certainly not least, the funniest moment of the RNC was when Mich McConell claimed democrats were going to regulate how many hamburgers you could eat. Although this made me laugh for twenty minutes straight until I was crying and had to close the tab—it goes to show the type of tactics the RNC uses. Only once or twice did I even hear mention of Trump's plan (that was factual) but I heard many of the speakers spread false claims regarding the democratic parties plans. Such as that they are going to down-size the intake of hamburgers one may consume.
Finally,I wanted to speak about a few things, including Trump’s final speech that lasted for about an hour and 10 minutes becoming the longest presidential acceptance speech ever. In the speech he made somewhere around 20 false or misleading claims which lead to a lie on average every 56 seconds. That's insane for a candidate running for president of the United States to lie in such a way. At that rate, he could perhaps be considered a pathological liar.
In his speech you continue to see the same fear tactics within everyone else's speeches with the exception of Melania's, but on top of this it was given in an open crowd of closely packed people with no masks on and no information on if any of them were tested for Covid 19. This was an absurd decision, while telling your supporters that a serious disease is just a hoax is one thing, but actually exposing them to it without any means of protection simply for your pride is an entirely sinister move.
When you look at Joe Biden’s acceptance speech it is a completely different story, not only did he do it virtually as to ensure the safety of viewers but I could find one instance in which he deliberately attempted to lie to or mislead viewers. While some of his claims such as a promise of a statewide mask mandate are easier said than done, none are flat out lies at least that I’ve seen, and when he spoke about the Trump administration unlike the way they spoke of him he didn’t need to continuously lie about their plans. The cold hard facts were scary enough to prove his point.
