"Hospitals are filled with unvaccinated people with Covid who have refused to get the vaccine, putting others in danger"-- Adeline Sylva, 7th grade
Hospitals are filled with unvaccinated people with Covid who have refused to get the vaccine. This puts more people in danger, because there are still breakthrough Covid-19 infections. The unvaccinated end up with severe Covid much more frequently than the vaccinated, and the hospitals are once again becoming overcrowded, which makes it far less likely that everyone will have access to the medical care that they require.
Since the Covid-19 outbreak of 2019, there have been anti-vaxxers swarming. At first they were refusing to wear masks, before we had an effective and life saving vaccine, causing the virus to spread and mutate. Now that all the vaccines are available, these same people refuse to take them or let their children get vaccinated. One of the many issues with unvaccinated people is that the more time and people become infected, the more the virus mutates, causing new varieties like the Delta Variant, which can cause breakthrough infections in people who are vaccinated.
Breakthrough infections in the vaccinated population are less severe. According to the CDC, after Delta became the most common variant, fully vaccinated people had five times the reduced risk of infection, ten times the reduced risk of hospitalization, and were ten times less likely to die.* Healthcare systems in some parts of the US are in "dire straits," the CDC's Rochelle Walensky said.
When asked about the rise in Covid hospitalizations and deaths, “It’s absolutely due to delta; it’s absolutely due to unvaccinated people,” states David Wohl, a specialist in infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina, in the New York Post, on America’s current standstill with the pandemic in.
Another issue is the people that get Covid or the Delta Variant is that the numbers add up quickly, and hospitals don't have infinite rooms and life support, so people get turned away because there are not enough beds, causing worsening sickness and even death. In many states all over the US, hospitals are flooded and overwhelmed. Because Republicans made this into a political issue, red states and counties across America have higher unvaccinated infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. Large numbers of mostly unvaccinated COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, which puts stress on each state’s entire health care system. There are not enough hospital beds and staff to care for people with Covid, and therefore, other serious health issues. Sometimes the people getting turned away don't have covid 19, but are in desperate need of healthcare, and also elective surgery for less serious issues. People are dying from other diseases and emergencies because hospitals cannot give them proper care.
Locally, in Alameda County, cases have stayed about the same recently, and are still high. The number of hospitalized Covid patients has fallen, however, in Alameda County area because Alameda has a higher percentage of vaccinated residents. California as a whole still has the highest number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, but we also have the highest population.
