"The White House is usually a source we can trust. But what if we couldn’t? There has been misinformation that President Joe Biden has spread himself, so is Biden really doing what’s right for Afghanistan?" -- Willa oxley, 8th grade
Because of Biden’s refusal to extend the deadline for Afghanistan withdrawal, many of the members of Congress experienced a feeling of “outrage” after the meeting that was held on Saturday night. All the congressmen could agree despite some not vocally saying that this was "the greatest blunder [of] the president in the history of the United States." The big issue is that now, more American lives are at risk and many believe that the Biden Administration will need “a lot of luck” to make sure that no lives are lost when exiting Afghanistan, to which Rep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C. called a "massive, horrendous political mistake." Because Biden had the final say on the withdrawal, that is what has caused chaos throughout the U.S, because he put politics over strategy, when strategy was needed at the time.
No one in Washington is willing to say whether or not Biden will withdraw because of the Taliban’s August 31st deadline for US military forces to leave. “We believe that we have time between now and the 31st to get out any American who wants to get out,” said National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at the White House. Even so, it’s still not certain if all Americans will be able to leave safely. People are starting to believe that throughout the entire war in Afghanistan, it’s capabilities still have yet to be used, and that leaves many questioning as to why.
It has been hurting the United States reputation and the Biden Administration is trying to pick an arbitrary date to get Americans out and deploy armed forces in a week. “This decision was not based upon anything military. It was based upon him trying to be grandstanding," says Murphy, referring to the President. It’s important to get Americans out because of the Taliban’s warning of “consequences” if the US keeps troops past the August 31 deadline. Though the Taliban has been sending threats, Biden still has not budged and in many people’s perspective, has not been doing much besides deploying soldiers and sending air support, though it was clear that American lives would be lost in the process.
Overall Biden and the Biden Administration are said to be costing many people’s lives, and at the same time, also ruining the United States reputation. Many disagree with his way of thinking and dealing with this situation and so far believe this is the worst decision he has made since becoming the President of the United States.
