When you hear the two words “Super Bowl,” what first comes to mind? Delicious snacks, fun with friends, touchdowns, or maybe all of the above? I interviewed three OSA students to see what their plans were for the Superbowl.
First up is Trevor Walton, a 7th grader in Literary Arts. Walton was introduced to football at five years old, when he watched the Superbowl with his family for the very first time. After that, Walton has always hoped to play football at St. Mary’s Highschool where his mother teaches African History. On the big day, Walton is going over to his grandma’s house and having a party. He is especially looking forward to his family’s Super Bowl sliders that “bring my tastebuds joy.’’
Walton clearly feels very optimistic about the Super Bowl, saying, “Honestly, I feel like The 49ers might [win] because they kicked it up a lot [and] they got back on top. They’ve been winning a lot of games. They showed they are the dominant team [and they’re] back on top, and they're able to prove themselves. Usually we see the New England Patriots every year and now they’re not [going] to win the Super Bowl again.”
Meirav Roisman, a 7th grade Vocalist, clearly disagrees, stating, “I don’t know, but I don’t think [The 49ers] are going to win.” However, that isn’t the only thing Roisman and Walton disagree on.
While Walton loves all of the Super Bowl, his favorite part is “seeing two teams go head-to-head, knocking each other down and doing amazing plays. The amazing suspense that both teams play [is an] amazing ride that is really interesting.” Whereas the only part Roisman looks forward to in the Super Bowl is the Halftime show.
Roisman was first introduced to football by her great grandfather, grandfather, and dad, who are avid fans. Every year, Roisman and her family go over to their next door neighbor’s house where they “all eat snacks and sit in front of the TV, watching the Super Bowl.” Even though she doesn’t feel like the 49ers are going to win the Super Bowl, Roisman stated that she “feels really proud to live in the Bay Area.”
Our interviews took a turn when I interviewed Cecilia Fontaine, a 7th grade Literary Arts student who doesn’t like football at all. While it might sound odd that a football hater is looking forward to the Super Bowl, it’s true. Fontaine loves Super Bowl commercials, and especially enjoyed the Sabra hummus ad featuring TikTok star Charli D’amelio. Other notable advertisements include the Planters peanut ad featuring iconic snack mascots and the unveiling of Baby Nut, Planters new mascot which replaced Mr. Peanut who died in an advertisement released a few weeks prior to the Super Bowl. If she isn’t watching the ads you’ll find her at the food table which her family goes all out on. If you were to spend the Super Bowl with Fontaine, you would find a table filled with baked macaroni and cheese, chips and salsa, fruit punch infused with Sprite, and homemade fried chicken-- a Super Bowl tradition.
All in all, whether you’re a football fanatic or only come for the advertisements, the Super Bowl is a fun way to spend time with family that everyone can enjoy.
