In the 2021 Presidential debate, the nation was left speechless when Senator Kamala Harris made history as being the first woman and a woman of color to hold office as the Vice President of the United States (VPOTUS). But it isn’t just Kamala who is making history. Her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, is also making history as the first Second Gentlmen of the United States (SGOTUS) as well as being the first Jewish spouse of a vice president.
The SGOTUS acronym was created on January 20th at 11am, during the 2021 inauguration.he title had never existed as there has never been a male spouse to any vice president. Doug Emhoff, a New York attorney who has been married to the vice president since 2014, will quite definitely have a different experience than all his predecessors. “With Mr. Emhoff’s new role, men in the United States could see that they could step back and let women lead,” said Chasten Buttigieg said in a NY Times interview, “[a]nd women can be the ones who hold the power in a relationship, and also like what it means to be a loving and supportive spouse, and sometimes that means taking a back seat or encouraging your spouse to fly.”

On January 14th, Twitter and Instagram made Mr. Emhoff a verified SGOTUS account, where news and updates of his official duties are shared.The second gentlemen has stated that he “plans to focus on equal access to justice and legal representation.”
The Emhoff-Harris family will be the first mixed-race family in the White House. Mr. Emhoff who is the father of two children from a previous marriage, making them the first stepfamily, to be sworn to office.
Number One Observatory Circle is the official residence of the second family located in Washington, D.C. The second family have yet to take up residency there due to repairs, and they are residing temporarily in Blair House, the president’s guest house.
Mr. Emhoff has said “ I’m going to really take what I learned as I move into this role, but I’m also going to make it my own,” he said. “I understand that I am the first gentleman to hold this role, and I certainly do not want to be last.”
