"Facebook and Google have banned Australian media in a battle over landmark media law"--Daria Oxley, 7th grade
Facebook and Google have banned Australian media in a battle over landmark media law.
Facebook and Google have recently started banning Australian media from their online platform. This happened about two weeks ago because Facebook didn't want to support a media that wasn’t going to earn them income. Facebook and Google are also blocking Australians from sharing news in a battle over landmark media law. How Facebook and Google are doing this, is blocking all the major media companies including News Corp Australia, Nine Entertainment, and Guardian Australia, as a way to offset the damage caused by the loss of advertising revenue to Facebook and Google.
Because of what has been happening with Google and Facebook, Australians have been sending threats to the people in charge of both companies demanding that they unban Australian Media. And the owner of Facebook in charge of this is quoting, “This is not our first choice but our last.” People have started to believe the reason for the ban is because Facebook and Google are afraid of paying for news content that they’re prepared to damage their own business to avoid it. Australians have also tweeted “Facebook is afraid of paying for media content that isn’t going to earn them any income.”
Draft media has also been trying to find a bargaining code to ensure Australian news has a seat at the table for fair negotiations with Facebook and Google. This happens to be at a bad time because while they are trying to ensure that the Australian content can make it to something bigger, it has been banned and now people are unsure if it will get unbanned or if Australian news will be shared at all.
While all this is happening, Facebook posted that the competition regulator, competition regulators is a person who is a government agency, that regulates and enforces competition laws said “misunderstands the dynamics of the internet.” Australians have been reacting to that, because the competition regulator, who has statutory authority, thinks that this is a big misunderstanding yet they are also not doing anything about it, and seem to only comment on what is happening to the situation.
Perhaps Facebook and Google may unban Australian Media, but that is still unknown. To find out more information about the current situation, click here.
