Governor newsom's recent passing of Senate bill 328 seems to be the answer to our prayers, but people were quick to show issues that might arise with it. --Maurice cole.
SB 328, otherwise known as the later school start bill could be the answer to all our problems, but also the reason for all our new ones. Senate bill 328 was officially passed on the 19th of September, by Gov. Gavin Newsom, as a way to better mental health for the pre-college student population in California.

The bill states that high schools will not be allowed to begin non-elective classes before 8:30 a.m., while middle schools will not be allowed to start before 8:00 a.m. SB328 will be in effect by 2023, giving schools up to 3 years to adjust and organize new bus schedules, class schedules, and all matters to fit the new early time limit. So sorry to all the seniors, juniors, and my fellow sophomores but we probably won’t be around to experience this new luxury when it’s implemented.

But, now that we actually know what the bill is, It’s safe to say that it’s a good idea. For example, one good thing is extra time to sleep or extra time in the morning. People can sleep better knowing that they can set their alarm to a later time, get in those few extra minutes and get rid of those bags under your eyes. Or if you already are a morning person, feel free to take those few extra minutes and take some time to breathe, look around, just take in life and get in a positive mindset for the morning.

Another great thing that comes with this is better productivity while in school, of course, this might not apply to everyone, but because our brains can be resistant to going to sleep in the early evening, we need to get as much sleep as we can get. Often times as well, students will stay up to very late hours to finish their homework because of the annoying amounts of homework we are given from each class. And even if you don’t get the extra sleep that you need, the extra time in the morning can go to waking yourself up and mentally preparing yourself. The more awake you are, the better prepared you’ll be, and the more work you’ll get done in class.

So, those two things are awesome for kids, better productivity and better sleep helps everyone, but then what’s the problem? Why do people still not like this whole plan? Well, for starters, the new schedules create timing problems for certain parents. Many parents drop their kids off before they go to work, and sometimes barely make it work or get in late, so this new schedule will make it difficult for parents to decide to take their kid later or take them at the same time and get to work. Other things that will be changed wit scheduling will be school buses, classes obviously, and teacher work hours. Teacher work hours might stay the same depending on the school though, so that is a varying factor.

Taking their kids very early also means the schools need to have some sort of adult supervision over the kids who arrive too early because they could be at risk of getting kidnapped or something bad happening. This takes more money out of the school’s pockets, which in turn makes the appearance of students much more needed to receive proper funding. And it’s too early to tell whether this bill will or won’t improve student attendance. So after giving a general overlook at the pros and cons, it begs the question of: is the change worth it?
