With the chaos of the 2020 election—the counting of ballots, false accusations, true accusations, the swing of Georgia—many were worried for the sake of their basic human rights, we elected the first POC, female, Vice President, and Trump continues to deny Joe Biden's victory. But among the excitement and the ruckus, many political stan accounts thrived. Many of these stan accounts were dedicated towards none-other than the upcoming president and vice president of the United states, along with other politicians. -- Piper stuip, 7th grade
With the chaos of the 2020 election—the counting of ballots, false accusations, true accusations, the swing of Georgia—many were worried for the sake of their basic human rights, we elected the first POC, female, Vice President, and Trump continues to deny Joe Biden's victory. Stan accounts aren’t news in the slightest. Not even political stan accounts are fresh from this election. Stan culture is a thing that's been a part of the roots of the internet for a long time, even before the slang was created in the early 2000’s. Many stan their favorite actors, or fictional characters and singers. But what happens when stan culture becomes paired with politics/politicians?
Politics and politicians are riddled with lies. They’re constantly covering up their problems to be admirable to a greater portion. And it's easier for them to hide their faults. While celebrities can also do a lot of bad things and cover them up, what they do does not affect as many. They can make derogatory comments, but those comments won’t cause mayhem throughout a country or wherever one may lead or have power. But the issue in stanning politicians is that it makes their complications seem okay. Stans dig up all the good things and don’t talk about the bad things, and it helps the politicians cover up their mistakes.
When asked in a forum, most said that they see political stans far too often. From personal experience, I’ve seen most of these stans on Tik Tok and Twitter. People talked about how they try their best to block it out of their feed, but it's still relatively easy to come by.
Within the same forum many said that they’ve noticed that those who stan political figures often buy an excessive amount of merchandise, denying things the politician has done, threaten others who may disagree with their ideas and/or candidate, and I myself have seen fancams and edits on Tik Tok and Instagram, which feels absurd.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been getting alot of attention from these political stanners. And yes, we may be trying to give people reasons to vote for them, and Harris’ election was a very big step forward for women, and for people of color in politics, but this not an excuse to reduce a person to only the things you admire about them. People are complicated. Even the greatest people have mistakes in their past, and we need to understand that. You can’t romanticize them or put them above what they’ve done.
Trump also has his many fans, who, from personal experience, are far more aggressive and unpleasant to interact with. They believe everything Trump says. I’ve seen people making videos of them just walking around stores and other public places just to receive attention.
Although it's irresponsible to stan a politician, you can endorse. You can agree with policies, and speak your opinion, and encourage people to vote for someone you believe will bring more of a positive change rather than negative. It's good to let your voice be heard, especially if you're not old enough to vote. You can give reasons, you like them and all that, but don’t over-do it or erase the mistakes, because it’s important to acknowledge those faults.
Although you may admire politicians, remember to trust the facts over fans.
