Two days after Joe Biden was named the Presidential Elect, Pfizer announced that their vaccine has had positive results. By reporting this, they have taken the lead in the vaccine race.

Despite President Trump’s best efforts, the vaccine he reassured would come before the election, has come too late to save him. Two days after Joe Biden was elected, Pfizer announced that they have had positive reactions in early developments of their vaccine. It is over 90% effective, which is as effective as the Measles vaccine. The participants in the study took two injections over a period of two weeks, which could make people less eager to get it.
John Bell, professor of medicine at Oxford University, who has helped with the Oxford vaccine, another contender in the race, says that “an amazing level of efficacy” and that this could mean a return to normality by Spring.
Pfizer refused to take government funding, so despite Trump’s attempt to take credit for it, this vaccine was developed independently.“Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump, our current placeholder until January, is already taking credit for this vaccine. He has lied too many times to count about when, how and if a vaccine would be coming out.”
However, some people feel uncertain if they trust this news. Lola Christ a 7th grade student at OSA believes that, “because of how quickly [the vaccine] seemed to come, that it was probably slightly untrustworthy.”
But, unfortunately, it’s not enough to have the experts make a vaccine, the public has to be in charge of taking it, and making sure others do, too. Declan McMahon, 8th grade, says that, “Anti-vaxxers better freaking suck it up and take it, because if they keep COVID out of stubborn refusal of vaccines I will be pissed.”
Calliope Dean, 6th grade, agrees. “I really hope they will [take the vaccine], not just for them but also for the others they would be risking,” she said. That is the worry from many Americans—that Anti Vaxxers will refuse to take the vaccine and keep the pandemic raging.
Pfizer’s announcement is not just good news for Americans, but for the rest of the world as well. Countries, such as Brazil, have experienced spikes and many deaths caused by Covid 19, so this could be life saving for the people in the rest of the world.
Isabella Schainker, 7th grade, is relieved. “I have. I was shocked because of all we've already been through.” And while it is totally acceptable to be relieved, there is a lot of work that needs to be done, even if this vaccine works and is approved. People need to be patient, as this will take months to be distributed, and it will first be given to first responders and seniors.
However, many of the students interviewed will only take it if “If it is proven to be safe and effective and isn't likely to have any bad effects in the long run.”
