"How can a new app affect children around the world? On Monkey, a new social networking app for teenagers, you could meet your new best friend or an online predator." -- Kaliyah Smith, 7th grade
How can a new app affect children around the world? On Monkey, a new social networking app for teenagers, you could meet your new best friend or an online predator.
After Omegle, a website/app like Facetime where users were randomized with another person, shut down, many new apps were created including one called Monkey. . The purpose of Omegle was so people could find new people and make friends, but soon the app was invaded by people who shouted hurtful things and practiced unsettling stuff on the website. The same thing came when Omegle shut down and people found Monkey.
Kids these days are all about video chat apps and social media and Monkey makes it easier for people to talk virtually. The app is almost like a mix of Facetime and Tinder for teens. If you're familiar with social media apps and online chat platforms like Snapchat or FaceTime, you’ll immediately know how to use the Monkey app, which is based on user profiles and common chat features like direct messaging.
Ife Thomas, a 7th grade fashion student at OSA said there should be an age limit considering the number of kids that could be on the app. “It’s extremely dangerous and it doesn’t make it any better that kids can lie about their age. There should be some kind of verification,” said Thomas. Thomas has never used Omegle, for fear of being shown something she didn’t want to see, but after going on Monkey, she knows she won’t be going on there again.
“In the times I’ve gone on Omegle, nothing ever happened. As far as I see it, Monkey is just the same and I enjoy it a lot,” said Camila Gaytan, a 6th grade Fashion student. Gaytan hasn’t had a negative experience with either Monkey or Omegle and only feels positive about both. She thinks the app should have an age limit from 13 up because she feels it's not that bad of an app.
Monkey is still available and can be downloaded on Google Play, although the Apple store seems to have removed it.” Apple has not released a statement regarding its exact reasoning. However, the Washington Post reported that they likely banned the Monkey App because 1,500 App Store reviews that highlighted inappropriate behavior toward minors. Apple, which has one of the most strict policies for its apps, must have removed it due to predatory behavior. Apple claims that it ‘carefully reviews’ every app on its website and has distinguished itself from other companies with less control. Apple must be careful to protect its customers from inappropriate sexual content as it develops its platform.” Says AmongApps.
Platforms like Monkey and Omegle have always been dangerous for minors, but the more apps that there are that resemble these, the worse it gets.
Based loosely on other opinions, though there are millions, you just have to do your best to stay safe when on the app and be careful of bad people on the internet in general.
