On May seventh First Lady, Melania Trump declared it to be “Be Best Day.” This was a follow up from her speech given just before. She unveiled her new “Be Best” campaign; addressing how social media use by children has lead to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and addiction, as well as resulted in drug use issues among young adults, and kids. She spoke to the fact that bullying has increased greatly from when there weren’t social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, who make it easy to send anonymous messages to kids being targeted.
Melania claimed that she will do anything in her control to prevent the repercussions of using social media; she wants every kid to be their best self. She is trying to target early-age addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts/actions. Mrs. Trump flew out a young woman who had published her mental health struggles across social media platforms. As she made an appearance, Melania made sure everyone knew who she was. This campaign has good intentions, but it seems that Trump is not realizing that there are children and young adults who don’t show their struggles on the surface. So what is Trump doing for these people? She can’t shut down social media, she doesn’t know every single person with a struggle, and it’s not in her control to show kids and adolescents how to be their best self. This generation has been raised on the internet, she can’t just take that away and change the effects. So a question arises; What is this campaign really doing?
There’s some irony to this campaign. It’s odd that all Melania’s points go against what her husband has been saying. President Trump has had constant threads of bullying over the past several years. He has taken shots at many other politicians, he has targeted other celebrities as well. In March of 2017 he took a shot at former First Lady Hillary Clinton, claiming unfactual things; “Why isn't the House Intelligence Committee looking into the Bill & Hillary deal that allowed big Uranium to go to Russia, Russian speech....” Trump tweeted. Melania’s points go against every single thing her husband has tweeted. So a question arises: Does Melania really care about the kids, or is she just saving face as First Lady?
Being the First Lady comes with responsibilities. They have all helped, or tried to help our country in some way shape or form. Hillary Clinton (42nd First Lady) held a campaign to advocate for gender equality in health care, later she became Secretary of State. Laura Bush (43rd First Lady) had campaigned for equal rights in healthcare, education, and politics even before she became First Lady, she progressed even farther into the campaign after her husband was elected. Our previous First Lady, Michelle Obama did many things for our country. She campaigned all around the world, she fought for every single citizen she could possibly fight for, and still continues to out of office. What has Melania Trump done? How has she helped our country progress? What makes her different from all the other people who have fought against bullying, and lost? Will she even follow up?
After the unveiling stories surfaced about how much content Melania’s campaign shared with the Obama’s. President Trump’s main goal going into office was to demolish anything Obama related, so why is his wife making the same claims the former First Family had made? This kind of campaign has been brought up a lot in the past couple years: How can we help kids? What are productive ways that our children can make friends? What can we do about the social media platforms that are causing these issues? What make Melania’s proposal any different? How can we rely on someone who hasn’t done anything for us yet? Are we supposed to believe her? Our First Lady needs to follow this through, maybe then, our country will begin to change.
Right now it seems that this whole campaign is a facade. All over twitter people are arguing about weather or not our First Lady will follow up on her proposal. And what if she does? What is she going to do that we haven’t already tried?
