Earlier this month, Governor Newson proposed an idea to bring students back to school campus in July. People have mixed feelings about this, and I interviewed students and faculty of Oakland School for the Arts to get their feelings on this.

“There’s been a learning loss, and you can either just roll over and just accept that, or you can do something about it.” There has been some worries for students from low income families since Remote Learning has started. The lack of technology in some areas of California has stopped many children from being able to learn, and the government wants to open schools in July so those kids can start learning again.
Annabella Ventresco is a 6th Grader in Visual Arts. Ventresco says that Remote Learning has some “good sides and low sides”, but she would prefer to go back to school “sooner than later.” She says that what it would take for her to be comfortable to go back to school is “ensuring that people wash and sanitize their hands more than usual and limiting physical contact with others.”
Chiara Kovac is a 7th Grader in Literary Arts. Kovac says that although she wants her summer, going back to school “would be a sign of getting better,” and she would feel happy about that. But she believes that schools will reopen in September because July seems a little bit unachievable.
Princip Oz says that the idea to reopen schools in July isn’t relevant to OSA because “though this situation has been challenging to say the least, our school has done an amazing job to keep students engaged and learning.” But, in other schools across the state, especially in underprivileged areas, that is not the case. Mr. Oz, like many people, believes that remote learning will continue into the Fall. But if we do go back to school in August, he believes that “it is still likely that future campus closures could result from any resurgences in the virus”
