JK Rowlings’ transphobia has been circling the internet for a while now. With the holidays coming, the Harry Potter series is a classic in many families, but should we be supporting Rowling’s art in the first place? . .On September 22, JK Rowling promoted merchandise from Wild Womyn Workshop. When you take a look at the website, one of the main features is the ‘Gender Critical’ section. As this section makes up a reasonably large part of the shop, it’s hard to miss. ‘Trans men are my sisters’ ‘Repeat after us: War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. Trans women are women.’ ‘Self-identification erases women.’ ‘F*** your pronouns’ ‘#istandwithjkrowling’ Fans have mixed feelings on JK’s insistent transphobia. The majority of them have divorced her from the Wizarding World, or reimagined Harry Potter characters as LGBT. The cast has voiced their opinions on the drama as well. Emma Watson, who played Hermione in Harry Potter, said: "Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are. I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are." Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry, tweets that “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.” Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood, states: “I disagree with her opinion that cis-women are the most vulnerable minority in this situation and I think she’s on the wrong side of this debate. But that doesn’t mean she has completely lost her humanity.” All in all, JK Rowling may have created Harry Potter, but she does not define it. So? Binge watch the movies, devour the books, and remember: Just because Harry Potter is written by Rowling does not mean it must be driven by its creator |
