Amazon Prime Air was originally founded in 2016. However, the idea of Amazon using drones for delivery was revealed in 2013, which was also the year of the first test where it was proven that Amazon could deliver within a 30 minute time period.
Before Amazon began developing deliveries via drone, Prime air was Amazon’s cargo plane service, now known as Amazon Air. Amazon isn't the only service experimenting with delivery by drone, UPS and Alphabet’s Wing is giving a go at it too. UPS was FAA approved shortly after Amazon was, however Alphabet’s Wing was approved before Amazon and has already started in various cities of Australia.
There are 3 different Prime Air drone models, each one is an update of the previous one. The newest model can travel up 50 miles per hour and can carry up to 5 lbs. The drone can lift off vertically much like a helicopter and then be able to travel horizontally like a plane, this allows the drone to reach higher speeds.
Amazon’s drone testing area is located in a field in the middle of the Cambridgeshire countryside. It is also known as their ‘top secret testing site’, this is where they have tested all of their deliveries by drone.
Unfortunately this was all the data I was able to grab about drone based deliveries so this article was quite short, sorry for the inconvenience!
