On June 24th - Roe v. Wade was overturned in the United States after being deliberated for 49 years in the court. This left the decision of whether or not abortion should be legal, up to individual states. According to the Supreme Court, abortion is a question of profound moral and social importance. This decision left millions devastated and horrified.
Roe v. Wade is a legal case regarding the constitutional right for a person to have an abortion. In 1973, the Supreme Court declared that unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional. Meaning that it is not laid down in the constitution, therefore not being enforceable. It has been a huge political argument since then. Roe v. Wade was named after the case of Jane Roe and Henry Wade. Roe was in desperate need of an abortion but Wade, the district attorney in Dallas Texas, denied her that right. She and millions of others have fought for their rights ever since. The majority of people supporting this law, are people who have never had to know what it's like to go through such discrimination and laws regarding their rights to their own bodies.
There are currently 21 states where abortion is still legal. In the states where abortion is illegal, punishments vary. Politico states that In Texas, you can get life in prison with no parole or a death sentence. In Utah, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Missouri, - aiding or having an abortion would most likely get charged with fines ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 and up to 15 years in federal prison. In other states, punishments can range as wide as two years in prison, or a death sentence.
This law is affecting people's daily lives. According to Jumes Law, In Texas, getting an abortion will cost you your life in prison, where sexual assault would typically result in 2-20 years in prison. Many states are considering abortion as a second degree felony. Preforming an illegal abortion will most likely get you up to 99 years in federal prison and your medical license will be revoked. It's terrifying that some people will go to such great heights to protect a fetus, but when it comes down to developed human beings, their standards for “helping'' helpless people seem to disappear.
According to The Hill, 112 million Americans have said that they struggle paying for healthcare. For people in states where abortion is illegal, who can barely afford healthcare, abortions would be near impossible. People in poverty have had very low chances of receiving safe abortions already, so adding this law makes everything much worse, and much more difficult.
The Washington Post mentions how women of color between the ages 18 - 49 face many barriers with safe healthcare access compared to white women of the same ages. They are also proven to be much less likely to benefit from employer actions to cover the costs of traveling for a legal abortion than their white coworkers. The unfair treatment based on race has already been used against those in need of an abortion when it was legal so just imagine how its going to affect them now.
There is one alternative to an abortion, which is childbirth. Not only does unwanted pregnancy and childbirth put people at a significantly higher risk of injury, it forces people to be pregnant with a baby that the law is forcing them to have. At this point it’s people in power denying human beings the right to what they're doing with their bodies and their future. It is causing them higher medical risks against their wills.
Banning abortion does not do anything but make abortion unsafe. People will get abortions. Making them illegal only puts people at higher risk. There are an endless amount of reasons why somebody may need an abortion. Diminishing the sexual and reproductive rights of people will cause major difficulty in receiving any abortions. The cost in abortion will rise. Before the overturning of Roe V Wade, abortion costs were typically $750 or less. Depending on the state or provider, costs can go up to $1,600.
Now that abortions are in higher demand and are near impossible to get in certain places, these costs will rise. According to The BJM, 75% of people requesting an abortion is the US are in poverty. The high costs of an abortion, whether that is the pill or the medical procedure, have already been a big struggle, but now that people will have to travel out of state just to be able to receive a safe abortion, it is much more likely that they will give up and settle for an unsafe, cheaper procedure.
The overturning of Roe v. Wade is denying us basic human rights regarding our bodies. This law has, and will continue to change the course of millions of peoples lives.
