After losing multiple lives due to an apartment fire, there have been many riots in China due to the Covid 19 safety laws. Streets have been filled with people trying to protest against this law and find justice.
On November 24th a fire started in an apartment building in Xinjiang province, resulting in 10 deaths, largely due to the Covid lockdown laws. Some apartment doors were tied shut with a zip tie and residents couldn't leave the building. Most of the fire exits were shut and the covid barriers and was made harder for people to exit the building and escape the fire. After this tragic event, the Chinese Government denied the tragedy and tried to cover it up suppressing the news and citizens who survived the fire.
Following this, protesters have been flooding the streets and chanting “CCP, step down” and “Down with Xi Jinping.” This is also coming from a country where political freedom and criticism is dangerous. Standing in the street with a candle and signs infront of the government building, but why are they doing this just now?
China has been going through a on and off Covid lockdown, going up to 110 days inside their home. The last protest in China was in 1998, at Tianamen Square, which was so impactful that the government called tanks and armed military troops to break up the protest. You could only imagine what Chinese residents would think about what would happen at a protest again. They were scared and feared the government and higher authorities.
Still, Chinese citizens protested across several parts of China for their freedom back leaving no room for higher authorities to run away. The government has now pushed back the Covid lockdown laws and changed the laws that were harshly implemented in the past. This old law tore apart happy families and had people stay in their apartments for months not being able to go outside. This shows communities in China have not been getting equality but also shows that protests could happen again. Changing the Covid lockdown law shows that this has a positive effect and have changed the government’s view.
